KOTA KINABALU: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has urged the government to act swiftly against the rise of AI-driven scams, warning they threaten national security and public trust.
LDP Information Chief Nicholas Ban said deepfake technology is being used to impersonate figures like Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and major institutions such as Bank Negara and Petronas in fake promotions, costing Malaysians over RM2.11 billion since 2024.
He called for immediate updates to outdated cybercrime laws, the introduction of an AI Governance Bill, and enhanced enforcement tools including real-time AI detection and a national “kill switch” to block scam operations.

He stressed that the recently passed Protection from Scams Act 2025 is not enough, and more comprehensive action is urgently needed.
“These scams are attacks on public confidence and our digital future,” he said.
