Airlines spell glamour, high profits, big business. TV viewers watch airline programs spellbound. The charismatic CEOs of airlines are known to everyone. But few know the real story. Photo: MyREF

Airlines across Asia Pacific region have continued to navigate their way back to health over the past year, expanding their networks, growing their fleets, and forging steadily new partnerships with counterparts both inside and outside of the region. Stronger performances from the majors: Singapore Airlines & Korean Air are making it the highest among all world regions. They've done a great job reconnecting what was lost, as well as expanding within the region, leading to an influx of international service. (www.aviationweek.com)

Most of MBA students in several universities that I was involved as adjunct professor, keep on asking what was the glorified secrets of the past golden era of Malaysia Airlines. As such, they are grateful to MyREF for organising a special online Professional Development Talk on Aerospace and Aviation Technology opened to the public this Thursday evening.

According to Willie Walsh, Director General of International Air Transport that "All governments understand and appreciate the importance of air transportation. As such, we can have an open discussions on a framework that will help airlines be successful, enabling them to grow and provide better service and more connectivity, while also reducing prices for more accessible travel and the shipment of goods. This, in turn, will help local economies flourish and make our airlines globally more profitable. (https//www.iata.org)

As HRD practitioner & management educator, I always share with my students and clients that the significant of labour costs to an airline depends not only on the wage rates but also on the productivity of that labour. Traditionally, labour productivity has been measured in terms of output that is, available tonne-kilometres, per employee. When we deeply examine the Asian/Pacific group of airlines there is a quantum jump in labour productivity. It really depends on institutional factors like employee retention, re-skilling & up-skilling.
