Leaders urged to unite on 40pc claim amid funding strain

KOTA KINABALU: Tamparuli assemblyman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau has called for both government and opposition leaders to set aside political differences and jointly pursue Sabah’s 40 per cent revenue entitlement, stressing it should be treated as a matter of state dignity and long-term development rather than politics.

He said Sabah’s financial constraints are behind delays in development, weak infrastructure, limited job creation and food security challenges, noting that projects like POIC Lahad Datu have been affected by funding delays that also pushed up costs significantly.

Madius added that Sabah currently produces only about 20 per cent of its rice needs, arguing that restoring the 40 per cent entitlement would strengthen the state’s financial capacity and reduce dependence on federal support, allowing Sabah to “stand on its own” and accelerate development.
