Claims of an alleged plot to unseat Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the leader of Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) were brushed off by his deputy, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who labeled the rumours as unfounded distractions.
In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia, Hamzah addressed the speculation head-on, describing the claims as nothing more than gossip propagated by those outside the coalition. He made it clear that no discussions have taken place within PN regarding a leadership transition, nor has there been any talk of removing Muhyiddin.
Hamzah maintained that his working relationship with the former prime minister remains solid and based on mutual respect. He emphasized that had any such move been in the works, he would have been the first to know about it. Yet, no such information has reached him.
He also pointed out the impracticality of orchestrating a leadership change without proper dialogue, particularly with him, given his senior role in the party. Any move made in isolation, he added, would be both reckless and doomed to fail without consensus.
Rather than indicating division, Hamzah interpreted the rumours as a reflection of PN's increasing political relevance. He noted that as the coalition's influence grows, so does the interest of external parties in stirring internal discord. However, he dismissed these efforts as ineffective, noting that those spreading the claims are not affiliated with the party and often lack accurate insight.
He added that even Bersatu and PN members have been confused by the source of the speculation, with no clear origin or individual backing the narrative. The confusion within party circles further indicates the baselessness of the gossip, he suggested.
Hamzah concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the party's unity and stability. For now, he insisted, there is no conversation around succession, no betrayal in the making, and no fracture in leadership. The coalition, according to him, remains firmly under Muhyiddin’s guidance as it continues its role as the main opposition bloc.
The remarks come amid a period of heightened political tension and speculation, but Hamzah’s firm dismissal signals a message of continuity and strength within PN’s leadership ranks.
