Lecce sports chief Pantaleo Corvino has defended Roberto D'Aversa after his sacking.

D'Aversa was axed after headbutting Verona Thomas Henry at the end of their weekend clash.

He has now been replaced by Luca Gotti and Corvino said: "I asked Gotti to accept the challenge and he did. We have done everything possible on the market with our resources.

"There must be a culture of falls. We must get used to defeats so that we can get up again. I'm not a hypocrite, I give my best. What happened on Sunday struck me a lot. I've known D'Aversa for 25 years, he's a correct person, he's a decent person. He didn't do what he did because he was violent.

"It leaves a mark on me that, despite 66 consecutive games in Serie A in the safety zone, we must always be criticised harshly. Gotti is the best on the market and he accepted immediately."
