In a recent development, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has given the sons of former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad a final extension to submit their asset declarations.
Azam Baki, the Chief Commissioner of MACC, announced that Mirzan Mahathir and Mokhzani Mahathir have until mid-September to fulfill their obligation of declaring their assets. This decision comes after the commission granted an extension earlier this year, and it represents the last opportunity for the brothers to comply with the agency’s requirements.
Speaking to reporters at an MACC event held at the Royale Chulan Hotel, Azam Baki made it clear that this extension is definitive. “This will be the final extension,” he stated. “If they fail to meet the new deadline, we will have no choice but to proceed with legal action.”
The saga began in January when MACC instructed Mirzan and Mokhzani to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year their father, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, first assumed the role of Malaysia's Prime Minister. The initial deadline for these declarations was set for February, but the brothers were granted two extensions after requesting more time.
The extensions have now reached their limit, and MACC’s patience is wearing thin. The commission’s strict stance highlights its role in maintaining integrity within Malaysia’s political and business spheres, ensuring that even the most prominent figures and their families adhere to the country’s anti-corruption laws.
The process has attracted considerable public and media attention, partly due to Dr. Mahathir’s long and influential political career. As the situation progresses, the pressure on the Mahathir siblings to comply with the MACC’s demands is mounting, and any further delays could lead to significant legal repercussions.
The case exemplifies the broader efforts of the MACC to enforce accountability among those in positions of power, reinforcing its dedication to combating corruption and upholding transparency. The outcome of this high-profile case will likely set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, underscoring the importance of adherence to legal and ethical standards.
