Kota Kinabalu: The Legal Aid Department (JBG) has handled 476 cases in Sabah, comprising 315 civil and 161 Syariah matters, to provide legal assistance to those in need.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the service is available to Malaysian citizens earning an annual income of below RM50,000.
Speaking at the Sabah-level JBG Discourse Programme at Wisma Wanita on Thursday, Mustapha urged community leaders to help disseminate information about the service to rural villages where awareness remains low.
He noted that civil cases handled by JBG cover road accidents, tenancy, hire purchase, small estate distribution, padi cultivation, and consumer claims, alongside family matters such as divorce, maintenance claims, and enforcement of court orders.
To improve accessibility, JBG has deployed two Justice on Wheels vehicles in the state, carrying out 85 outreach programmes so far this year to assist lower-income groups.
