Legal Battle Over 'Man on the Run' Documentary: Najib Razak's Defence Pushes for Removal

Datuk Seri Najib Razak's legal team has initiated efforts to halt the airing of the Netflix documentary 'Man on the Run', delving into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal. They argue that the content, featuring interviews with key figures like former Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is highly prejudicial and contemptuous.

During Najib's corruption trial over alleged misappropriation of substantial 1MDB funds, lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah brought this issue to the attention of presiding judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah. Shafee revealed Najib's directive to pursue a contempt proceeding against Thomas and to take legal action against Clare Rewcastle-Brown, the Sarawak Report editor, citing her statements in the documentary.

Rewcastle-Brown, a pivotal whistleblower in exposing the global-scale financial scandal, came under fire for her contributions to the documentary.

Shafee emphasized that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Home Ministry possess the authority to pull the documentary off the air, urging immediate action.

Premiered on Netflix recently, the one hour and 38 minutes documentary has swiftly climbed the ranks to secure the fourth spot among the platform's Top 10 movies.

Additionally, the documentary features an interview with Najib conducted before his confinement in Kajang prison subsequent to losing his final appeal in a corruption case linked to SRC International Bhd.

Najib, 70, faces four charges of leveraging his position to acquire bribes amounting to RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds, along with 21 charges of money laundering involving the same sum.

The ongoing legal battle over the documentary suggests a broader narrative that intertwines the legal complexities of Najib's case with the portrayal of key events through media platforms like Netflix.
