Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has defended his management of Jannick Vestergaard.

Rodgers is yet to even include Vestergaard in a Premier League matchday squad this season, despite the club's woes in defence, with the centre-back's only appearance coming in the Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Stockport. His last Premier League start was in January.

“Jannik understood his role when he signed, that he was a cover centre-half," Rodgers said. “He had a number of centre-halves ahead of him. We had lost Wesley but with the greatest respect, he wasn't going to be the number-one choice, he was going to be a cover player and unfortunately he hasn't been able to feature so much. But on a personal level, he is a good guy.

“I know Kasper (Hjulmand), I respect his focus is on Danish players. I'm sure he would love all the Danish players in his squad to be playing. But it's more than one player. It's a collective in our defensive way and that's something we'll continually look at."
