Leptospirosis cases up 6%

THE Department of Health (DOH) reported a 6-percent increase in leptospirosis cases, a disease common during the rainy season.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the DOH said from Jan. 4 to June 6 this year, leptospirosis cases in the country rose by 6 percent compared to the same period last year.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection commonly transmitted when a skin lesion is exposed to floodwater contaminated with animal urine, as well as tainted food and drinks.

Leptospirosis symptoms typically appear two days to four weeks after exposure and may include fever, headache, muscle pain, red eyes and dizziness. If left untreated, leptospirosis can lead to serious complications such as liver and kidney failure, and damage to the lungs or heart.

The DOH noted that most cases involved farmers and individuals who waded through floodwaters or walked through stagnant water following heavy rains.

”If you can’t avoid going fishing or working in the fields, remember to wear boots, especially if you have an injury or sprain on your foot,” the agency said.

The DOH added that people exposed to floodwaters should immediately wash with clean water and soap. It urged the public to avoid wading through floodwaters, especially if they have an open wound.

”If you experience a fever, headache, dizziness, body pain or tears after fishing, consult a doctor immediately,” the DOH said.
