Flags are a representation of a country, often flown at international events like the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. For Malaysian students worldwide hearing the melodic tune of Negaraku brings back our patriotism spirit. I remember back in school, as we sang Negaraku while Jalur Gemilang was being hoisted by the prefect created a sense of purpose and belonging. This has led my baby boomer generation to really love our motherland with the hope, especially the younger generation, will appreciate the need to protect our nation.
The Jalur Gemilang embodies everything we love and care about our country, Malaysia. It has been designed to signify hardships in the past and the fight for freedom, symbolising the authority and sovereignty of the land, as well as the peace, honour, respect, and unity of its citizenship. Jalur Gemilang represents the nation and not merely the government.
August heralds National month in Malaysia, a time of national pride & patriotism as preparations for National Day intensify. It is heartening to learn the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the people to fly Jalur Gemilang, even at homes during the national, Malaysia Day campaign to boost the spirit of freedom. It symbolises sacrifices, and 67 years of independence. He stressed that there should be no elements of abuse of power among those who have been entrusted with responsibilities.
I am happy with the outcome of my interview with 5 grandchildren aged 5 to 12 years old who are studying at Kindergarten and Primary School in Cyberjaya. They were able to educate me that “Jalur Gemilang features a yellow crescent moon & a 14-pointed star against a blue rectangle on the upper left corner. The entire face is adorned by 14 horizontal red & white stripes of equal height and length representing the equal status in the member states of Malaysia. The moon & star represent Islam, the main religion of our country.”
