Today (13th November), as Tun Daim Zainuddin departs from this world at 86, we find ourselves witnessing more than the passing of a former finance minister; it is the end of an era, a chapter that stretches across Malaysia’s modern history.
Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who worked alongside Daim through decades of growth and turmoil, expressed "incredible sadness" over losing not just a friend, but a fellow fighter for “race, country, and religion.”
It’s a personal grief laced with the complicated legacy of two men who profoundly shaped this country.
Daim’s journey from the finance minister’s office to chair of the Council of Eminent Persons in 2018 captures the arc of Malaysia’s economic and political story. A close ally to Mahathir, Daim was both an architect and a steward, guiding the nation through some of its most challenging economic waters — from the 1980s recession to the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997.
In these roles, Daim built systems, brokered deals, and made decisions that left imprints on the national economy, shaping the lives of millions. His actions during these times were pivotal, even controversial, but they always bore the urgency and ambition of someone driven to transform a young nation.
However, Daim’s latter years have been marked by scrutiny. Investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into his wealth and an enforcement action against him and his wife for allegedly failing to declare assets have cast a shadow on his final days.
No charges for corruption have been brought against him, yet these proceedings hang as a reminder of the complex intertwining of legacy, power, and accountability.
Mahathir’s lament that his friend faced “harassment for no reason” in the twilight of his life underscores a broader tension in Malaysian politics — the uncomfortable dance between history’s giants and a nation’s pursuit of justice.
For Mahathir, this is a moment not only of sorrow but also of reflection on the toll taken by lifelong service. His call for justice for Daim, invoking a belief in divine fairness and reunion in the afterlife, is more than a personal prayer.
It is an appeal to Malaysians to remember Daim not as a name tangled in legal knots, but as a fighter, a loyalist, and an economic architect. Mahathir’s eulogy encapsulates a poignant truth: even in the midst of modern probes and public discontent, there remains space for gratitude toward those who, in their time, shaped the nation.
As we mourn Daim’s passing, we also look to the future, recognising that history, like life, is never tidy. We cannot overlook the role figures like Daim played in lifting Malaysia into its current status, nor can we ignore the shifts in public sentiment and the need for transparent leadership.
Perhaps, in honoring Daim’s contributions, we must also reaffirm our commitment to an evolving Malaysia — one that values both service and accountability.
In the end, Daim was, like all of us, a product of his time, and he carried Malaysia’s burdens with a singular, if sometimes controversial, sense of duty.
Let us mourn him not just with sadness, but with a profound understanding of the layers that make up a public life and the inevitable questions that follow its close.
