Let's not forget the data itself. The government records, healthcare information, financial transactions, strategic national databases — these need robust protection under strong governance frameworks.
Data is now the world's most valuable resource and safeguarding it is a matter of national security, not just IT policy. Additionally, we need a workforce ready for the AI economy.
Universities must expand programmes in artificial intelligence, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, semiconductor design and digital ethics.
Technical and vocational institutions should equip young Malaysians with practical, hands-on skills to manage and innovate in this fast-moving sector.
Energy policy must evolve in lockstep with digital expansion. Every new data centre should be pushed to maximise renewable energy, improve efficiency, recycle cooling water and minimise environmental harm.
Green data centres should become the standard, not the exception. We also need to make sure local companies get a real seat at the table.
Incentives shouldn't just lure multinationals, they should nurture Malaysian tech firms, AI startups and innovative entrepreneurs.
A vibrant domestic ecosystem creates better jobs and reduces our long-term reliance on imported technology. Strong governance is essential, too.

Clear policies on AI ethics, cybersecurity, cross-border data flows and critical digital infrastructure will maintain public trust while encouraging innovation. Policies must be coordinated across ministries.
A respected digital nation is when we own the knowledge, control the technology, able to protect the data and share fairly in the prosperity generated.
