Think using a cute nickname is harmless? Taiwanese couple learned the hard way that what works in a relationship does not work at the airport!
According to Oriental Daily, an airport operations staff in Taiwan shared her unusual encounter that left both her and internet users stunned. What began as a routine check-in process for a couple quickly turned into a travel nightmare when staff discovered that the male passenger's flight ticket had been booked under the name “Baby Lin” instead of his legal name.
According to the operations staff, she was assisting a couple at the check-in counter when she noticed something was wrong. Despite repeatedly searching the airline's booking system using the information provided, she could not locate the man's booking. Suspecting a booking error, she asked the passengers to show their travel confirmation on their phone. That was when she saw the unexpected passenger name displayed on the screen: “Baby Lin”.
“At first, I thought there was some kind of system problem,” she recalled in a social media post. However, the real explanation turned out to be even more surprising. When questioned about the unusual name, the girlfriend casually explained that she always calls her boyfriend “Baby” in everyday life. Since she was the one who booked the tickets, she had automatically entered the nickname without realizing that airline tickets must match a passenger's passport details exactly.
The revelation left the airport employee both amused and speechless. She explained that airlines require the name on a ticket to be identical to the English name shown in the passenger's passport. Any mismatch can prevent a traveler from checking in and may also create issues during immigration and border control procedures. Unfortunately, because the booking information did not match the passenger's official identification documents, the couple could not simply proceed as planned. The boyfriend ultimately had to purchase a new ticket to continue his journey.
What made the situation even more memorable was the girlfriend's reaction. The ground staff member revealed that when she explained that “Baby” could not be used as an official passenger name, the woman looked genuinely shocked and asked, “So you really can't use Baby?” The staff member later joked online, “Miss, your boyfriend almost got stranded in Taiwan because of your love-struck thinking.”
The story quickly went viral after being shared online, attracting thousands of comments from amused netizens. Many expressed disbelief that someone could accidentally use a pet name when booking an international flight. “This is the most shocking thing I've read today,” a user wrote. Others joked that the woman seemed to think she was making a restaurant reservation rather than booking an airline ticket.
“I've never seen anyone use a nickname as their passport name before,” another commenter said, while others laughed that “love really does make people lose their judgment.” Better learn from their lesson and don't play play, you might have loving nicknames but never use it anywhere outside of your relationship else it would cost you more than disaster!
