The personal income tax deadline falls on 15 May 2026, and the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) is using the lead-up to push a wider point. Most taxpayers only engage with their tax records once a year, and that pattern can create problems that only surface when it is too late to fix them easily.
Speaking on Bernama Radio’s ‘Klinik Cukai’ programme on 21 April, LHDN senior revenue executive Azaharuddin Mohd Ali said many taxpayers only log into MyTax or LHDN when submitting their annual returns, leaving income records, relief claims, and personal details unreviewed for months at a time.
Outdated Records Create Problems At Filing Time
If your bank account details, registered address, or tax relief information have not been updated since last year’s submission, any inaccuracies only become visible when you are already mid-filing, at which point correcting them adds extra steps before your submission can go through cleanly.
The most direct consequence is a delayed or failed refund. If LHDN processes a repayment and the bank account on file is no longer active or has since changed, the funds will not reach you. Resolving this after the fact typically requires a separate request and additional verification.
Changes in employment, additional income sources, or new relief entitlements tied to medical expenses, education, or dependants also need to be reflected in your profile before you file, not identified during the process.
Tax Compliance Covers More Than The Annual Return
Azaharuddin said that failure to meet tax obligations may lead to enforcement action, and that compliance goes beyond payment. It includes reporting income accurately and keeping proper financial records in order.
LHDN’s push for year-round engagement reflects a broader concern that taxpayers treat the filing window as the full extent of their responsibility, when the accuracy of what gets filed depends on records being kept current throughout the year.
Check Your MyTax Details Before The 15 May Deadline
If you changed jobs, took on freelance income, got married, had a child, or started caring for an ageing parent in 2025, your tax profile may not reflect those changes yet. Each one can affect which reliefs you are eligible for and how much you owe or are owed back.
The same applies if you closed a bank account or switched to a new one. A refund sent to an inactive account does not automatically get reissued, and following up on a failed payment through LHDN adds weeks to the process.
The MyTax portal lets you review your profile, update personal and banking details, and check your filing status. Reviewing these before submitting gives you time to flag any discrepancies while the window is still open, rather than filing an amendment after the 15 May deadline.
