For some Malaysians, this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration came at a rather unfortunate time as it coincided with the much-dreaded income tax season. Indeed, as Malaysia adopts the self-assessment system for taxpayers, individuals must file their tax return for the year 2024 to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) by 30 April 2025 if they don’t have business income and by 30 June 2025 if they have business income.

Furthermore, given that taxpayers must also settle any tax balances or arrears by the same due dates, they must consider this expenditure when celebrating Aidilfitri. With the Hari Raya festivities including traditions that are heavy on the wallet such as balik kampung, baju raya, duit raya, open houses and more, having to settle your tax arrears during the same period can be quite troublesome for many Malaysians. More so, when you consider that any late payment will incur a 10% penalty charge on the balance of tax not paid by LHDN.

Besides that, the agency had even issued a reminder to taxpayers to settle their tax arrears before going abroad during Aidilfitri as a travel restriction may be imposed on them. LHDN added that travel restrictions under Sections 104 and 75A of the Income Tax Act 1967 and Section 22 of the Real Property Gains Tax Act 1976 are among the actions it takes against any individuals who fail to settle their tax arrears.

This Aidilfitri, taxpayers can defer paying income tax arrears by opting for instalments of up to 6 months

With that in mind, Malaysians who see their finances take a hit during this Aidilfitri have a new option to delay paying their income tax balances or arrears by opting to settle them in instalments of up to 6 months instead.

Called ‘e-Ansuran’, LHDN in a statement said that the initiative is meant to make it easier for taxpayers to apply to pay their tax balances or arrears in instalments. While LHDN has already been offering instalment options for taxpayers, ‘e-Ansuran’ allows taxpayers to get approval automatically without the need for supporting documents or having to visit LHDN offices.

According to the agency, taxpayers who fulfil these criteria are eligible for e-Ansuran:

  • The amount applied is over RM300
  • The minimum monthly instalment payment is RM50
  • Only payments of income tax are applicable and don’t include ongoing instalment plans
  • Cancellation of e-Ansuran can only be done at LHDN offices

To apply for e-Ansuran, taxpayers need to follow these steps:

1. Log in to the MyTax portal here and choose the ‘e-Ansuran’ option from the ‘ezHasil Services’ dropdown menu
