Lightning struck a group of five hikers in the Poland's High Tatras mountain range on Friday.

Two people were injured, one seriously, a member of the volunteer mountain rescue service told the news channel TVN24. Both injured people had to be taken to hospital but are not in a life-threatening condition.

The group was descending from the Giewont mountain, near the border with Slovakia, when the lightning struck. According to the rescuers, one of the tourists fell several metres down a rock face and was temporarily unconscious. He had to be flown by helicopter to hospital in the town of Zakopane.

The second injured person was taken to hospital by the mountain rescue service over land. No details were initially given regarding the identity or nationality of the injured.

A thunderstorm warning was in place on Friday for the entire High Tatras region and the surrounding area.
