“Like a mini Melaka!” – China Woman Fluent in Malay Shows a City in Fujian with Many M’sian Elements

A sharing by a woman from China mesmerised Malaysians online recently after she brought netizens on a virtual tour of a city in the Chinese province of Fujian filled with Malaysian elements.

The TikTok video by the woman, Latifah Huang, has since garnered over 368,000 views and more than 23,600 likes as of the time of writing.

In the video, Huang, who speaks fluent Bahasa Melayu, showed us around Quanzhou City, which she reveals has many elements of Malaysian culture, especially the Peranakan culture.

Dressed elegantly in a Nyonya Kebaya, Huang then showed off the beautiful Chinese city and its Malaysian elements. These include how the shop lots there have the kaki lima or five-foot way; the iconic roofed continuous walkway commonly found in Malaysia that has its roots in Melaka and other Straits Settlements.

Furthermore, Quanzhou also has Malaysian traditional kuihs and food, traditional Malaysian houses, shops selling Kebaya, Peranakan-style architecture and more.

Huang then elaborated that Quanzhou is located in Fujian Province in South China, which is a popular spot among the Chinese people.

Moreover, many Quanzhou residents used to live in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

After coming back to China, they chose to live in Quanzhou, hence that’s why the city has a unique mix of local and Southeast Asian cultures.

Malaysians are planning to visit the city after seeing Huang’s video

In the comments section, many Malaysians were awed by Quanzhou’s unique history and mix of cultures, as well as by Huang’s personality.

One commenter said that he’s interested in visiting Quanzhou after seeing the video and wondered if there are any tour packages from Malaysia to go there.

Meanwhile, several commenters were pleasantly surprised to see Malaysian culture being ubiquitous in the Chinese city, including the Batik shirts, Baba and Nyonya Kebayas and Nasi Kerabu.

Besides that, one commenter asked whether it’s easy to find Halal food there, to which Huang replied yes.
