Strikes by Italy's air traffic controllers and at the EasyJet budget airline led to 160 cancelled flights on Monday, a spokesman for Rome's airports told dpa.

The strikes were called for 10 am (0800 GMT) to 6 pm in Rome and Naples, with limited strike action at other Italian airports. Passengers were advised to check their connections before travelling to the airport.

Disruption was limited at Rome's Fiumicino, the capital's most important airport, the ANSA news agency reported. There was no disruption at Ciampino, the city's second airport.

The airport in Naples said that 44 flights had been cancelled, and that there had been no major difficulties for passengers, who had in general been informed beforehand by their airlines and had not travelled to the airport.

ITA Airways announced earlier that 38% of all flights on Monday would be cancelled, including to destinations abroad.

EasyJet said the impact on traffic between Germany and Italy had been limited, with only a few flights affected between Munich and Frankfurt in Germany and Rome.
