During his eulogy for Lindsey Graham, President Donald Trump read out the late senator’s phone number while recounting their bitter rivalry on the campaign trail.
Speaking to U.S. officials and foreign dignitaries gathered at Washington National Cathedral, Trump remembered how, in 2015, he had publicized Graham’s personal cell phone number during a rally. “His phone exploded,” Trump noted.
He then rattled off the digits again just in case, Trump said, “anybody wants to give it a shot.”
The president also described Graham as a “tough cookie” who “never saw a war he didn’t like.”
Among those in attendance are Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Earlier in the day, Graham’s remains were taken to the U.S. Capitol for a private ceremony. Another funeral service will be held in South Carolina tomorrow.
Graham, who died unexpectedly this month of an aortic rupture at age 71, served for more than two decades in the Senate. He was a foreign policy hawk, frequently advocating for greater U.S. interventionism overseas, and a close ally of President Trump.
His younger sister, Darline Graham, was appointed to serve out the remainder of his term, and she is now running for a full six-year term with Trump’s endorsement.
