Tragedies can happen at any time to anyone, without any warning.
5 people in South Korea were injured on Monday night during New Year after a massive explosion at a liquefied petroleum gas station in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province. The explosion is believed to have been triggered by a gas leak. The fire broke out around 8:41 pm.
2 of the victims suffered severe burns but are now in stable condition. Fortunately, no deaths were reported, and 3 other victims suffered minor injuries, based on reports by The Korea Herald and IHA News.
The fire and the explosions, however, caused a lot of damage, especially to the buildings and the vehicles that were parked nearby. The video of the explosion, as captured by CCTV footage on the street and the dash cam of a vehicle circulated online, showing the sudden and shocking explosion that “rocked” the area.
Very much like the scene from the horror game and movie Silent Hill, the area was covered with thick fog before the intense explosion took place.
Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene and thanks to the manpower of 117 personnel, they managed to contain the blazing fire within 3 hours. The intensity of the fire caused damage to a total of 14 buildings, in which at least 25 people had to be evacuated from the respective buildings.
The National Forensic Service, Korea Gas Safety Corporation, police, and fire authorities conducted a joint investigation and said that the explosion had left a 300-meter-wide burn mark.
