KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today confirmed that the list of candidates for the post of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner has been presented to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

He said the shortlist consists of individuals deemed qualified to lead the country’s anti-graft agency, adding that the final announcement would be made at a later date, Bernama reported.

Speaking to reporters after attending a community engagement session and lunch at Pasar Tani Kekal Permas Jaya in Johor, Anwar said he had discussed the matter with the King earlier in the day.

When asked how many names had been submitted for His Majesty’s consideration, he responded jokingly.

“There are 120 (names submitted),” he said.

However, Anwar declined to reveal the actual shortlist, saying the names would only be announced once the decision is finalised.

According to a post on the HRH Crown Prince of Johor Facebook page, Sultan Ibrahim and the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, granted an audience to the Prime Minister today.

Yesterday, His Majesty said he would personally select the new MACC chief commissioner, stressing that the position is crucial in ensuring the commission continues to function effectively as the nation’s main institution in combating corruption, malpractice and abuse of power.

Sultan Ibrahim also said there was no need to politicise the appointment.

Earlier, Anwar spent time meeting local residents, taking photographs with members of the public, and visiting businesses at Pasar Tani Kekal Permas Jaya.

He arrived at 12.33pm and was received by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Pasir Gudang Member of Parliament Hassan Abdul Karim.

The Prime Minister later proceeded to Masjid Bandar Permas Jaya to perform Friday prayers, where more than 1,500 people were present at the mosque and surrounding area. - April 24, 2026
