Live: Andy Burnham sworn in at House of Commons after confirming he will run in leadership race

Watch live as Andy Burnham is sworn in as the MP for Makerfield in Westminster on Monday (22 June).

The former Greater Manchester Mayor has announced that he will run to replace Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader, who announced his resignation earlier on Monday.

Sir Keir set out his resignation plans in an address outside Number 10, setting 9 July as the start date for the process to find his successor.

Shortly after announcing his resignation, former health secretary Wes Streeting said he would back the newly elected MP for the role.

Mr Streeting said that he believes Mr Burnham will build “an inclusive party”, and that he would not fight for the leadership.

Last week, Mr Burnham was elected as MP for Makerfield following a historic by-election win.

He won by a sizeable 9,231 votes, comfortably seeing off the challenge from Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon.

Mr Burnham will also be sworn in alongside SNP’s Lara Bird, who was elected as the party’s new MP for Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, as well as Douglas Lumsden, the Scottish Conservatives' new MP for Aberdeen South.
