KUALA LUMPUR – Vote counting is underway for the 15th general election (GE15) after polling closed at 6pm.
While there are 222 parliamentary seats, the results coming in tonight, however, will not include two of them – Padang Serai in Kedah and Baram in Sarawak.
Padang Serai will hold polling separately on December 7 following the death of one candidate, while voting in Baram was suspended this afternoon due to bad weather which hampered election workers from reaching their stations.
As such, the results tonight will be for 220 parliamentary seats, 59 state seats in Perak, 42 in Pahang, and 15 in Perlis, as well as the Bugaya by-election in Sabah.
At 220 federal seats, the magic number that coalitions will strive to achieve tonight is 111, a simple majority needed to form the next government.
Given the emergence of several political coalitions, however, the race for a simple majority will not be an easy one.
The GE15 electoral roll has 21,173,638 voters. Of that number, 20,905,366 are ordinary voters; 146,737 are army personnel and their spouses; 118,794 are police personnel, including from the General Operations Force, and their spouses; and 2,741 are absentee voters who are currently abroad.
