Liverpool hero Robbie Fowler feels Brendan Rodgers is facing major problems at Leicester City.
Ten players have entered the final year of their contracts at the club, including Youri Tielemans, Caglar Soyuncu, Daniel Amartey, Ayoze Perez, Jamie Vardy, Schmeichel, Jonny Evans, Nampalys Mendy, Hamza Choudhury and Ryan Bertrand. All of which are yet to agree fresh terms.
Fowler wrote for the Sunday Mirror: "I'm not sure what's going on at Leicester right now, but for some reason they do appear to be at the crossroads. I've got a lot of time for Brendan Rodgers – he's proved how good he is over the years.
"[But] the signings haven't been happening and there's talk of players leaving, such as keeper Kasper Schmeichel [above, with Rodgers], who has been a foundation of their success, including winning the Premier League title and FA Cup.
"Brendan always says the right things, he's never looking to stir things up. It's the same now, he's not causing a fuss even though there appears to be a situation developing behind the scenes because of what happened in past seasons with Leicester continually punching above their weight, expectation among the fans has grown probably to an unrealistic level.
"Brendan has consistently said Leicester can't compete with the top four or top six. They have probably become a victim of their own success. The facts are what they have achieved has been unbelievable, but it's nigh on impossible to keep repeating it. Some Leicester fans want to see the club spending big money in the transfer market, but maybe they haven't got it.
"It seems that the fans of most Premier League clubs expect new players to be brought in, no matter the cost. As far as Schmeichel is concerned, he's been one of the best keepers in the Premier League, but he's not getting any younger and if he wants to move on – Nice was mentioned – good luck to him.
"If they can get a bit of money for him, then great. Also, don't forget Leicester have Wales keeper Danny Ward, who cost £12million from Liverpool. I also don't think that any Leicester fan would begrudge Schmeichel moving on."
