Liverpool produced a sublime attacking performance to thrash Galatasaray and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Trailing 1-0 after defeat in Istanbul in the first leg, Arne Slot’s side were back to their brilliant best in a fluent showing as they powered past their visitors 4-0 at Anfield. The hosts started fast and opened the scoring 25 minutes in via a beautifully-worked corner routine converted by Dominik Szoboszlai, and should have been further ahead before half time only for Mohamed Salah to miss from the penalty spot.

It could have become a nervy night at that stage but Liverpool surged away with three goals in 10 minutes. Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch took them ahead in the tie before Salah atoned for his penalty miss with a fine curling finish – his 50th Champions League goal. A rematch with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, who knocked Liverpool out of last year’s competition, awaits.

Hugo Ekitike reacts to LIverpool's win

22:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

"I think we deserve to be here," said Ekitike to TNT Sports. "Really happy. I think we did a great job tonight. We could have won 10-0. We missed a few chances but we still did a good job. We can be proud of us tonight and we can look forward to the quarter-final.

"I think we needed this. We missed a few chances at the end of the first half. I had my chances. I could have scored more tonight to be honest. Everybody did a great job; ran for each other and that's why we won."

On Mohamed Salah: "He's a legend. Sometimes people say that he has had a difficult season, but for players like us, who have been watching him for years, he's important. Tonight, he had many chances but he still had the mindset to give me a great ball to score. I'm really happy for him. He deserves it. We need to do that every game now."

Liverpool set up Paris Saint-Germain clash

22:00 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Emphatic and entertaining, job done and done well for Liverpool. That was more like it in plenty of ways, even if they were aided by Galatasaray being dismal. Now it is PSG and a rematch after last year.

Federico Chiesa goes hunting for a late goal, but can’t force his shot between the tangled limbs of a couple of Galatasaray defenders.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 90 + 2 minutes

21:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

We shouldn’t underestimate just how good Liverpool have been tonight. After a tricky week, this has been just the tonic, never allowing the visitors to settle or build any sort of attacking fluency. They’ve had 26 shots to Galatasaray’s two, which rather tells the story.

RULED OUT! Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 90 minutes

21:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Liverpool have a fifth...or not! Alexis Mac Allister prods home but the referee whistles for an apparent foul on the goalkeeper from Virgil van Dijk. Hmm...I’m not sure there was too much in that, but Van Dijk did make contact as he contested for the ball. The VAR has a quick look and sticks with the on-field call.

Six minutes more to be played.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 89 minutes

A triple Liverpool change. Off go Florian Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike; on come Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni and Federico Chiesa.

Liverpool are almost toying with their visitors. Hugo Ekitike slices a half-volley wide after an intricate build-up.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 85 minutes

21:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

We’re into the final five minutes at Anfield - in theory, at least. There’ll be plenty of stoppage time after that Noa Lang injury.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 81 minutes

21:43 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

It was a bit odd that, with Galatasaray requiring goals, Mauro Icardi had not come on earlier. Even when he did, it was only because Noa Lang was stretchered off. It has been a bad night in every respect for the Turkish champions.

Noa Lang is being replaced; the vastly experienced Mauro Icardi is on up front.

It looks like something has cut Lang, which is a real concern. There are a number of medics down there helping him.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 76 minutes

21:37 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ow! We’re having a strange night of injuries at Anfield - Noa Lang, on earlier after Victor Osimhen hurt his wrist, appears to have done something similar collliding with an advertising hoarding beyond the Liverpool goal.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 74 minutes

21:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A standing ovation for Mohamed Salah as he takes leave. Cody Gakpo comes on.

A change for Galatasaray now: off goes captain Abdulkerim Bardakci, replaced by Eren Elmali.

Mohamed Salah looks to have an issue for Liverpool.

That’s 25 attempts in all for Liverpool now. This is some showing.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 68 minutes

Almost five! This is some second half performance from Liverpool. A simply sublime diagonal switch of play from Ryan Gravenberch frees Hugo Ekitike, who tees up Mohamed Salah to rattle the crossbar.

Liverpool reload and Alexis Mac Allister’s shot is palmed by Ugurcan Cakir on to the head of Ekitike, who can’t keep his header down. On to the roof of the net.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 66 minutes

21:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Curtis Jones is replacing Jeremie Frimpong. A round of applause for the Dutch full-back as he is replaced.

Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray, 64 minutes

21:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The giddy Liverpool fans serenade both Mohamed Salah and Steven Gerrard, unsure quite what to do with themselves. There’ll be no boos tonight.

GOAL! LIVERPOOL 4-0 Galatasaray (Mohamed Salah, 62 minutes)

21:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The best of the lot! 50 goals in the Champions League for Mohamed Salah, and the milestone is brought up in some style!

Liverpool can book their tickets to Paris - this is an absolute beaut. Salah produces a swift exchange of flicks with Florian Wirtz as he cuts in on that left peg of his, before curling wonderfully into the far corner with the slightest of touches off the goalkeeper’s fingertips. 4-0 on the night, 4-1 on aggregate, and a meeting with PSG awaits.

Liverpool 3-0 Galatasaray, 60 minutes

21:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Galatasaray bring on Yunus Akgun for Lucas Torreira in midfield. They’ve got to go for it - but look so, so, so open through midfield, as they have done for much of the night.

Liverpool 3-0 Galatasaray, 59 minutes

21:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Breathless stuff at Anfield. Liverpool feel like they might score with every attack. 3-1, remember, is their lead on aggregate and another goal would surely kill the tie off for goo.

OFFSIDE! Liverpool 3-0 Galatasaray, 56 minutes

21:18 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Nearly four! The ball is in the back of the net as Wilfried Singo gets himself all in a muddle trying to turn away a Jeremie Frimpong cross. The Liverpool right-back was offside, though.

Liverpool 3-0 Galatasaray, 55 minutes

21:17 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

A double blast that could send Liverpool to Paris. Redemption for Mo Salah after his penalty miss with a role in two goals. And Galatasaray, who have offered nothing tonight, now need two

GOAL! LIVERPOOL 3-0 Galatasaray (Ryan Gravenberch, 54 minutes)

21:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Can they ever? That’s three and Liverpool move ever closer to the Champions League quarter-finals!

Galatasaray are being run ragged. A cute ball from Florian Wirtz is lashed goalwards by Mohamed Salah, and though Ugurcan Cakir bats that effort away, he can do nothing about Ryan Gravenberch’s follow-up.

Liverpool 2-0 Galatasaray, 53 minutes

21:14 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Now, can Liverpool build from here? They’ve been in complete control tonight.

GOAL! LIVERPOOL 2-0 Galatasaray (Hugo Ekitike, 52 minutes)

21:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This time it is in! Liverpool finally have their second - and the lead in the tie!

You cannot say it has been undeserved. It’s a beautiful, flowing move that sweeps between helpless Galatasaray players as if they are training dummies. A brilliant first time ball from Alexis Mac Allister finds Mohamed Salah, who also hits his pass immediately to tee up Hugo Ekitike to apply the finishing touches.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 50 minutes

21:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Cakir again! A lovely slide-rule pass from Hugo Ekitike springs Mohamed Salah, who can’t force the ball between the legs of the onrushing goalkeeper. Liverpool could be home, dry, and eyeing up a quarter-final with Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 48 minutes

21:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Liverpool create an early second-half chance - Hugo Ekitike stings the right palm of Ugurcan Cakir, who is having a fine night.

image is not available

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 47 minutes

21:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And there’s an immediate difference to Galatasaray’s attacking threat: Baris Yilmaz, Leroy Sane and Noa Lang are all capable of stretching the Liverpool defence in the way that the injured Victor Osimhen was not. Alisson and Virgil van Dijk combine to snuff out the danger.

Second half...

21:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Changes at half time for the visitors, as we might have expected. Common sense has prevailed with Victor Osimhen replaced by Noa Lang, while Leroy Sane is on for Sacha Boey. Roland Sallai will slide back on to the right of defence, one would assume.

Back underway.

HT: Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray

20:57 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

A terrific first half for Liverpool in many respects. Except, arguably, the scoreline. They really should have got a second goal, with Salah's penalty the biggest missed opportunity. They are a team who struggle to make it 2-0 - as they showed against Spurs on Sunday.

How are Liverpool not further ahead? Ugurcan Cakir makes a superb double stop to keep the hosts out again.

Wow. Galatasaray hanging in there. That’ll be that for the first half.

SAVED! Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 45 + 4 minutes

20:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mohamed Salah...SAVED! A poor penalty, by his standards, trying to clip it down the middle but getting neither height nor direction right. It bends into the shin of the goalkeeper as he dives to his left - all square in the tie we remain.

PENALTY! Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 45 + 2 minutes

20:48 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Up go Liverpool in appeal and after a long think about it, the referee points to the spot!

Ismail Jakobs was a little late on Dominik Szoboszlai, and there looked to be contact. Penalty given!

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 45 minutes

20:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Dominik Szoboszlai, for once, doesn’t quite catch a shot cleanly. A rarity.

Five additional minutes.

Osimhen is going to try and tough it out. On the pressure still comes from Liverpool.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 37 minutes

20:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It feels like Galatasaray are in real bother here. Victor Osimhen has a serious issue with his wrist and, while desperate to stay out there, is contributing very, very little. Can they get through to half time and adjust? All of the momentum feels to be with Liverpool at the moment.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 35 minutes

20:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Galatasaray had been readying Noa Lang to come on for Victor Osimhen, but the striker appears to have waved away his replacement. He’ll carry on...for now.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 33 minutes

20:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Liverpool are all over Galatasaray. Ugurcan Cakir is forced into a sprawling save after a crisply struck shot from Dominik Szoboszlai with the outside of his boot.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 30 minutes

20:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Off the crossbar! There was a foul from Alexis Mac Allister on the goalkeeper, so it wouldn’t have counted - and the little Argentina midfielder might be glad of that after a pretty poor miss. He’d been left, seemingly, all alone in the six-yard box after another well-worked corner routine from Liverpool to the far stick. Alas, he had blocked the goalkeeper, and headed against the bar somehow anyway.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 30 minutes

20:31 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This is a really vibrant Liverpool performance. Arne Slot is incensed when Hugo Ekitike goes down in the box, squeezed out by Wilfried Singo with no foul deemed to have been made.

Florian Wirtz is then denied by a deflection as Galatasaray cling on.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 29 minutes

20:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It could, should, have been two - Mohamed Salah passes up a great chance, unable to beat Ugurcan Cakir in the Galatasaray goal.

The story of Liverpool's season

20:29 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

The (good) story of Liverpool's season. Yet again, it is Dominik Szoboszlai. He has now been directly involved in nine Champions League goals this season - scoring five, assisting four - despite spending some of the campaign at right-back.

Liverpool 1-0 Galatasaray, 27 minutes

All square, then, at 1-1 in this round of 16 clash. That really was delightful.

GOAL! LIVERPOOL 1-0 Galatasaray (Dominik Szoboszlai, 25 minutes)

20:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And that is a delicious set-piece routine to level the tie!

Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff from Liverpool, straight from the training ground. Galatasaray appeal for a foul but there is nothing given on the field - it looked like Ibrahima Konate played a blocking role in a choreographed corner. Alexis Mac Allister drills it back towards the penalty spot with Dominik Szboszlai arriving late to meet it oh-so-sweetly on his left foot, guiding it into the corner.

The VAR is happy - goal stands!

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 24 minutes

20:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Anfield lifts the volume as a lovely passing move ends with both Alexis Mac Allister and Milos Kerkez having shots blocked, the second of them behind for a corner.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 23 minutes

20:23 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Victor Osimhen is still soldiering on, though we’ll see what appetite he has for contact as the night continues. The striker is very good at finding space in the box, of course - and one chance might be enough for him.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 20 minutes

20:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Every Galatasaray player going to ground is making very, very sure that the referee is aware of a possible foul. Lucas Torreira is trodden upon, entirely accidentally, by Alexis Mac Allister as the pair challenge for a loose ball, and rolls about like an armadillo even as play continues. It looks like it might be a sore enough one, but surely there is no need for that? It’s not a foul, either.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 18 minutes

20:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There’s a better chance! Hugo Ekitike again can’t quite get his first touch right to a difficult bouncing ball after strong work down the right from Florian Wirtz.

At the other end, Victor Osimhen is still struggling a little - is it his wrist? Maybe his knee? Perhaps a combination. Thinking to do, maybe, for visiting manager Okan Buruk.

A rare fast start for Liverpool

20:18 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Liverpool have made too many slow starts this season. At least they have begun today at a high pace and with plenty of energy, even if it is yet to yield clear-cut chances.

image is not available

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 16 minutes

20:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Smart defending from Sacha Boey. The right-sided Galatasaray defender loses track of the flight of the ball as a diagonal is splayed over his head, but reacts well, heading the ball away from Hugo Ekitike bravely after the Liverpool forward’s first touch.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 15 minutes

20:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Still no really clear sighting of goal for Liverpool despite this fast start.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 14 minutes

There are a few Galatasaray players in the wars. Mario Lemina lands with a thud after he and Jeremie Frimpong collide in mid-air.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 12 minutes

20:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This is the sort of start Arne Slot would have wanted. Liverpool are showing plenty of bite, and a bit of attacking invention - Hugo Ekitike’s shot does not have the requisite power to truly test Ugurcan Cakir, though.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 11 minutes

20:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Galatasaray captain Abdulkerim Bardakci goes over and has a word with Osimhen, who eventually calms down. That clearly hurt him, but his reaction seemed a little over the top, without knowing the specific action that he was responding to. He should be back on shortly

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 9 minutes

20:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Victor Osimhen cops a sore one, awkwardly catching his wrist on a knee of a Liverpool player. The Nigerian striker is down in some discomfort - the magic spray will sort it, it seems.

Or maybe not - Osimhen is still writing about. Or is he? He’s back on his feet and furious about something that the Liverpool players have done. Quite the carry-on, this.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 7 minutes

20:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A gorgeous touch from Gabriel Sara brings the ball down from a cloud, almost setting up a shooting opportunity for an arriving teammate. Liverpool squeeze them out.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 6 minutes

20:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jeremie Frimpong is perplexed when he is whistled for a foul by referee Pawel Raczkowski. The Pole had been due to been the fourth official but Szymon Marciniak suffered a back injury while warming up, so is now operating near the technical areas.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 4 minutes

20:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A good start from Liverpool, pressing high early and threatening a couple of times. Mohamed Salah loses his balance on entry into the box, before Dominik Szoboszlai swings in a free kick from deep on the left that is much too shallow.

Liverpool 0-0 Galatasaray, 2 minutes

20:03 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Roland Sallai has begun up on the right for Galatasaray - he’s up against Hungary teammate Dominik Szoboszlai tonight.

Richard Jolly is our man at Anfield, and writes: “The Galatasaray players have just gone over to applaud fans in the Kenny Dalglish Stand. Officially, there are no Galatasaray fans here. Unofficially, there do seem to be some - along with some white shirts and scarves - there.”

KICK OFF!

20:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Right, here we go - Galatasaray have beaten Liverpool twice this season but never here, and they’ll have to do without any travelling support.

19:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Arne Slot has admitted he is feeling the pressure but urged his side to embrace it against Galatasaray.

“Of course I feel pressure, we all feel pressure, because we are in an industry where every single day you’re in this industry there’s pressure,” the Liverpool manager said. “We’re working at a beautiful club with a great, great history and we feel this. We can achieve the quarter-finals of the Champions League, so, yeah, that comes with pressure.

“But it’s also nice to have that pressure because we could have also been out or playing at a lower level or not even be in. So we embrace this pressure and we’re looking forward to playing Galatasaray tomorrow.”

Arne Slot accepts blame for Anfield boos as Liverpool boss aims to win back fans

19:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has conceded he "must have done a lot of things wrong" to provoke the ire of Anfield supporters, as he seeks to mend relations with frustrated fans.

The Dutchman faced a public backlash for the first time since his arrival in summer 2024, with the team booed off the pitch after conceding a 90th-minute equaliser to Tottenham on Sunday.

While discontent has simmered on social media throughout the season, last weekend marked the first occasion home fans expressed their disapproval so overtly.

Liverpool as expected - and with an advantage

18:58 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Arne Slot makes the changes he was probably expected to - four in total, bringing back Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, Ibrahima Konate and Milos Kerkez for Rio Ngumoha, Cody Gakpo, Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson. Liverpool have lost twice to Galatasaray this season, failing to score in either game. The Turkish champions are out for a hat-trick but, due to past behaviour by their crowd in other games, have no travelling supporters at Anfield tonight.

Jamie Carragher questions Arne Slot’s future after Liverpool held by Spurs in ‘awful performance’

18:25 , Alan Smith

Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Arne Slot remains the right man to lead Liverpool following their “awful performance” in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

The reigning champions squandered an opportunity to move up to fourth in the Premier League table after Dominik Szobsoszlai’s first-half free-kick was cancelled out by Richarlison’s late equaliser.

It was the third late equaliser Liverpool have allowed this season, in addition to five injury-time winners conceded, as relegation-threatened Spurs avoided defeat for the first time in six matches. Home supporters booed at full-time, a reaction that the head coach said was “completely normal.”
