Liverpool welcome struggling Tottenham to Anfield as the Carabao Cup pits two heavyweights against each other in the early rounds.
The Reds begin their Carabao Cup campaign tonight, while Tottenham - without a goal in the Premier League - travel north off the back of their thumping second-round triumph over Charlton.
Andoni Iraola’s start to life as Liverpool boss has been hit and miss, with Saturday’s drab goalless draw at home to Fulham stunting momentum picked up from back-to-back wins over Ipswich and Atletico Madrid.
He finds himself in a less desperate position than Roberto De Zerbi, however, who will hope legendary former Reds left-back Andy Robertson can provide the inside track on Anfield on his emotional return to Merseyside.

De Zerbi's rift with Richarlison goes on

The forward was omitted from Spurs’ 25-man Premier League list submitted earlier this month after being told he is surplus to requirements. Having failed to secure a departure, he remains eligible for domestic cup competitions.
However, De Zerbi confirmed the former Everton player, who rejected a move to Vasco da Gama on Friday, will not feature. This comes despite his record of four goals in seven games against Liverpool for Spurs, who have not scored in the league during 2026-27.
“Richarlison, you already know everything and nothing change for Carabao Cup or Premier League. The situation is the same,” De Zerbi said.
This is the latest chapter in an unwanted saga involving Richarlison, who responded to a social media post by Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano that confirmed De Zerbi’s decision by simply posting the word “Why?” with a ‘crying face’ emoji.

This is Gary Neville, a Premier League legend with 19 years of playing experience, plus another 15 years as a pundit, reacting in bafflement as Erling Haaland’s derby winner was allowed to stand.
His confusion was a shared experience nationwide. Somehow, someway, Enzo Fernandez was not deemed to be interfering with play or impacting his opponent when he flung himself at Josko Gvardiol’s cross from a blatantly offside position. The decision objectively went against Ifab’s laws of the game, which all top-level leagues adopt.
Beyond that initial moment of self-doubt, the fear that maybe we don’t understand football at a rudimentary level after all these years, we all quickly realised that was not the case. VAR had got it wrong; they’d seen black and called it white, again.

While they remain goalless in the Premier League, Roberto De Zerbi’s men hit five against Charlton in their second-round tie to reach this stage, with Savio’s debut cameo stealing the show as he scored within seconds of coming off the bench.
Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies made up the rest of the scorers - two of those players are no longer Spurs players, with Danso and Moore out on loan.
However, their defence did not go unbreached, with once Liverpool youth product Lloyd Jones scoring a consolation in N17 to end the game 5-1.

The final whistle blew and then, as is the case at Elland Road, the Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘I Predict A Riot’ began to blare out across the Yorkshire sky. It was a letter away from being accurate. Riot? This was a rout. Leeds United have not had a bigger Premier League win at Elland Road since a 6-1 demolition of Bradford a quarter of a century ago.
This was a thrashing of Newcastle, who were flattered by the eventual scoreline, and, before he conducted his usual lap of Elland Road, applauding the fans, Daniel Farke stood just outside the penalty box, seemingly in contemplation, wondering, perhaps, how far Leeds have come and how far they may go. “We have to dream big and think big,” said Farke.
“We have created a winning culture within this club and high standards. We don’t have the best individual quality but we can be an outstanding team,” he added. Dominic Solanke also faces his old club tonight (though like Robertson, he’ll have to do it from the bench) and Roberto De Zerbi has no doubt he can rediscover his form of his Bournemouth days.
“I can’t understand why I have to think negative. OK, because the last season he was injured many times, yes,” De Zerbi explained.
“It’s not the same last season (compared to) this season. This season, I repeat, we have a top physical, medical staff. We have not three games per week.
“I spoke with him and I would like to manage him in the best way I can. In physical aspect and in mental aspect, because he’s a sensitive guy, he needs to feel full confidence and from myself he has big, big confidence.
“I believe he can score 10-15 goals for sure. He’s already scored in Bournemouth and why not he can score in Tottenham? It’s the same sport, different stadium, no pressure, because in our stadium if we push, if we play well, the fans are with us.
“Tomorrow I would like (Solanke) to play part of the game. I don’t know if at the beginning or at the end but one part of the game. It can be important for him.

Tottenham’s Andy Robertson will make an emotional return to Anfield for his new club, while Pedro Porro remains a doubt at right-back after missing the Everton draw. Richarlison has been snubbed from the squad amid his dispute with the club.

Instead, the Carabao Cup has brought Andy Robertson a rapid return. He could play at Liverpool within four months of his farewell whereas, by comparison, his friend Jordan Henderson had to wait four years to receive the appreciation from his former club.
Robertson is nevertheless guaranteed a rousing ovation. And yet, recent as his exit is, Liverpool may already be missing him. Virtually any side, of course, would miss the Scot at his peak, the period of about five years when he was among the world’s best left-backs and which make him an automatic choice for Liverpool’s greatest Premier League side; he has a case, too, to be in an all-time Liverpool team.
Roberto De Zerbi faces a decision whether he is in the Tottenham team now: Robertson helped keep a clean sheet against Everton on Saturday but had been benched at Nottingham Forest the previous week. Yet the early evidence from Anfield is that Liverpool’s left-back department has been downgraded by Robertson’s departure.
