And the Portuguese's seemingly imminent arrival from Sporting could also be accompanied by a further addition in midfield.
Should 150m-rated Paul Pogba ultimately be sold to Real Madrid, United are said to be lining up the signing of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio as well.
United will apparently pay 63m to secure Fernandes' arrival in Manchester after talks accelerated over a deal.
And the signing could be completed as soon as a 'matter of hours'.
