A quiet neighbourhood in Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama, Penang, turned into a disaster zone when a fire, believed to be started by a loan shark, ravaged three terrace houses and destroyed nine vehicles in the early hours of June 24. The suspected arson, intended as retaliation over unpaid debts, tragically targeted the wrong residence, leaving innocent families to suffer the consequences.
According to one of the affected residents, Mohamad Asrul, signs of impending danger had emerged as early as June 16. He and another neighbour had discovered gasoline traces and splashes of paint outside their homes. In addition, a note addressed to a different woman — whose house remained untouched — was found warning her to settle a loan or face consequences.
Despite lodging a police report that same day, Asrul claimed that authorities did not follow through with a promised site visit to document the suspicious evidence. Days later, at approximately 4:30 a.m. on June 24, he was jolted awake by the sound of a fire spreading through the row of terrace homes.
Neighbours played a critical role in preventing casualties by alerting residents with loud honks and by shaking gates to wake those still inside. Asrul credited these swift actions with saving lives. He described how an explosive device was reportedly hurled into one of the houses, quickly igniting the blaze and causing it to engulf neighbouring properties and vehicles parked nearby.
The Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) confirmed that it received an emergency call at 4:52 a.m. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 5:59 a.m., with full site monitoring concluding several hours later. Assistant Director of Fire and Rescue Operations, John Sagun Francis, stated that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Though no injuries were reported, the incident has left a deep scar on the affected families. Asrul expressed gratitude to the emergency responders and fellow neighbours who came to their aid, but also voiced his frustration over becoming collateral damage in a case of mistaken identity.
As authorities continue to probe the arson, the case has highlighted growing concerns over illegal loan shark activity and the devastating consequences of vigilante-style enforcement.
