Amid intense lobbying for the top post, the Mohali Municipal Corporation will elect new Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor on June 9. The Municipal Commissioner has called a meeting of newly elected councillors on June 9 for swearing-in, after which the election for the top three posts will be held by a show of hands.
In the Municipal Corporation elections, AAP has emerged as the single largest party with 27 councillors.
Three-time councillor Sarabjit Singh Samana, son of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh; State AAP general secretary and Water and Sewerage Board chairman Dr Sunny Singh Ahluwalia, and four-time councillor Sukhdev Singh Patwari are engaged in intense lobbying for the Mayor’s post. Party insiders have not ruled out the possibility of a dark horse bagging the top post.
Ahead of the meeting, several councillors have left for an undisclosed resort away from Mohali, sources said.
The Mohali MLA, who is lobbying for his son Sarabjit for the coveted post, however, said a few boys might have gone there for “bonding”, but he was at home.
“I am sitting at my home. I don’t know about them. After a hectic schedule, they may have gone there for a bonding. During election time, such rumours are always going around. It is the party, which will take the decision ultimately,” he said.
The sources said the councillors would be back on June 9.
Dr Ahluwalia is said to be close to top leadership, while Samana reportedly has the support of a majority of newly elected councillors. Patwari was reported to have met Manish Sisodia and buttressed his claim to the post.
