Local authorities, petty traders urged to work together for public benefit, Nga says

IN a call for greater cooperation between local authorities and petty traders, Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming, has said the need for both parties to follow the law and act responsibly for the collective good.

Nga made the statement following recent tensions between petty traders and local enforcement officers, stressing that both groups must work in partnership to ensure harmony and public welfare.

He noted that local authorities (PBTs) must carry out their duties with integrity, while traders are expected to comply with regulations, including obtaining valid licences or permits before operating.

"I understand that many petty traders are working hard to earn extra income during this festive season. However, local authorities must ensure that business areas remain safe and convenient for the public," said Nga in a statement issued today.

He added that cooperation and mutual understanding between traders and authorities are essential to maintaining public order. "If any disputes or issues arise, it is important that we seek rational solutions to avoid incidents that could disrupt harmony," Nga stressed.

Nga also assured that the Ministry of Housing and Local Government would continue to monitor the enforcement of regulations, ensuring that local authorities adhere to the standard operating procedures in their operations.

This, he said, would help ensure the smooth running of business activities while protecting the public's well-being.

The Minister's comments come after a viral video showed a confrontation between Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officers and balloon vendor Muhamad Za’imuddin Azlan, which sparked widespread public reaction.

The incident, which has since been reported to the police, has drawn attention to the need for better communication and understanding between local authorities and traders.

Nga’s remarks underline the importance of a balanced approach in managing the interests of both local authorities and the entrepreneurial spirit of petty traders, particularly during busy periods like the festive season. – March 31,2025
