Traditional foods, often rooted in centuries-old culinary traditions, hold a special place in the culture fabric of societies across the globe. These foods are deeply embedded in the customs, ritual & histories of communities, which pass down their knowledge from one generation to the next. Traditional foods are often characterized by their diversity, locally adapted ingredients and unique preparation methods, making them a treasure trove of culinary heritage. I remember according to my alumnus and good friend, Professor Naqi Azam, Senior Advisor to VC of DHA Suffa University Pakistan that “Traditional foods are not just a reflection of culture: they are also a source of vital nutrients. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, contributing to overall health and well-being. Moreover, traditional diets have been associated with reduced risks of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. By incorporating traditional foods into modern diets, we can promote healthier eating patterns, and prevent diet-related health problems.”

As for me, a kampung bona fide, I found eating local food is crucial for better nutrition, environmental sustainability, and community economic health. It supports fresher, more nutrient-dense food, reduces carbon footprints from transport, sustain local ecosystem, and keeps our money with local economy.

I trust the higher nutritional because local foods and fruits are often consumed closer to the time of harvest, it is typically fresher and has a higher nutrient count compared to produce transported over long distances. The environmental benefits of buying local has reduced the need for long-distance shipping, reducing pollution and carbon emissions. Furthermore, I am supporting small local farms and help to protect biodiversity, and promote local green space.
Our money spent on local food directly supports local farmers and reinvests in the community's economy. I have seen smaller local farms often use fewer pesticides and are less dependent on packaging for long-distance transport, leading to a safer, and more sustainable development growth of food supply.
