On Saturday 14 September afternoon, Sharifuddin's family announced the founder and lead singer of the evergreen band in Taiping had passed away peacefully. Music fans, my classmates of King Edward VII batch 1966 & former colleagues of Tenaga Nasional Berhad around the country have reason to mourn the demise of a great entertainer.
He was 74 years old. Grieving the loss of a best friend who had been a source of joyful get-togetherness at our hometown, Taiping especially during festive seasons and the annual school alumni dinner, is a deeply personal and emotional experience. During this grieving time, we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection and sad remembrance.
Wok or Ahwok as we fondly called him, had lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, classmates of King Edward Edward VII batch 1966, no one did it better than him. He lived for his music, family, colleagues, relatives, classmates, schoolmates, friends, fans & the local communities. Love one another as he would want that us all.
Wok's musical career begun upon completion of his senior high school when he joined TNB in Taiping and participated in the cultural and corporate band. He served TNB for 35 years until retirement and started a second career as a full time musician and artist performing with his band at various clubs, corporate functions & entertainment joints.
I am always amazed of his stamina and dedication signing Highway Star and performing 7 days a week. He had been a source of inspiration to young musical talents at our green grass of home. I remember at the age of 60 years old, Wok won handsome contract leading Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) Combo for Perak State Broadcasting in Ipoh.
I admired my childhood friend, Wok, the legendary artist for creating an uplifting youthful memories for our classmates, and on how integral multiracial Taiping's music was to most of its residents in the social gatherings. We will miss Wok … may his soul rest in eternal peace.
