Locally developed technologies get support

THE government is preparing Philippine-developed technologies for industry evaluation, commercialization and possible entry into global markets through collaborative efforts of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The initiative was discussed during the DOST-CHED Innovation Summit 2026 on Sept. 28 at the Batangas State University in Batangas City.

Assistant Secretary for Technology Transfer, Communications and Commercialization Napoleon Juanillo outlined plans for the Synchronized Innovation and Business-Oriented Launchpads (Sibol).

”Market-driven research and product development will be nurtured through the planned Synchronized Innovation and Business-Oriented Launchpads in the regions,” Juanillo said.

He noted that Sibol would allow promising technologies to be developed closer to researchers, farmers and entrepreneurs rather than concentrating technology development in laboratories in the capital.

DOST said the Philippine Technology Evaluation and Standards for Testing would provide technical validation for new Filipino technologies.

Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the value of the country’s science and technology investments should not be measured by the amount of money spent on researchers and projects.

”We should also ask what capabilities that investment has created,” Solidum said during the summit.

He emphasized the need to look at the country’s scientific and technological capabilities collectively rather than as individual achievements.

CHED Chairman Shirley Agrupis urged innovators to work with the government in addressing contemporary challenges and to connect research capabilities with the needs of communities and society.

The InnoVenta Davos was introduced during the summit. It is intended to create opportunities for Philippine institutions and innovators to present their capabilities, develop partnerships and explore opportunities in global markets as the country prepares for the 2027 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
