PETALING JAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke’s earlier pledge to resign from the Cabinet has come under renewed scrutiny following Umno’s payment of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s RM50 million fine.
Loke had previously said he would resign from the Cabinet if Najib was allowed to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
The minister was at his office today to chair the Transport Ministry’s post-Cabinet meeting, while members of the media waited outside for his response to the latest development.
As of 2.50pm, Loke had yet to comment on whether he intended to act on his earlier pledge.
On Sept 29, Loke revealed that he had submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim but had been asked to remain in his position for the time being.
His position reflected DAP’s opposition to the arrangement allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
Umno confirmed today that it had completed payment of the RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court following a fundraising campaign through its Najib Razak Solidarity Fund.
The payment fulfils one of the conditions attached to Najib’s conditional pardon, which allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to compliance with the other stipulated conditions.
