BEIJING: A six-year-old boy in China suffered a horrific accident recently when he fell while eating a maltose lollipop with a bamboo stick, which pierced through his mouth and into his brain, Guangzhou Daily reported.

The incident occurred when the boy attempted to break his fall with his hands, causing the stick to penetrate his skull base.

His panicked parents rushed him to the hospital, where a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed the 11-centimetre bamboo stick had reached the part of the brain controlling movement and coordination.

Surgeons at Zhongshan Hospital classified his condition as critical and performed a high-risk, seven-hour operation to remove the stick without damaging vital structures.

Miraculously, the boy recovered without neurological damage and was discharged two weeks later without complications.
