London terror incident latest: Two Jewish victims of ‘appalling’ Golders Green stabbing named as man arrested

Two Jewish men who were stabbed in Golders Green in north London have been named as Nachman Moshe ben Chaya Sarah and Moshe Ben Baila.

The 76-year-old and 34-year-old suffered knife wounds and have been taken to hospital, after they were attacked at around 11.16am on Highfield Avenue.

A terrorist incident has been declared with a 45-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was Tasered after he allegedly tried to stab police officers, with police stating he had a “history of serious violence and mental health issues”.

During a press conference, Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley was heckled with chants of “resign” and “shame on you”, while Sir Keir Starmer has called an emergency Cobra meeting.

The prime minister condemned the “utterly appalling” attack and has said he will visit the scene “as soon as possible”.

Jewish charity the Community Security Trust (CST) said it was working closely with the police and urged anyone with information to contact the police, Shomrim and CST immediately.

The incident took place not far from where four Hatzola ambulances were set on fire in an antisemitic hate crime on Highfield Road in April. There has been a string of arson attacks targeting Jewish sites in north London.

A protest is taking place on Golders Green Road, close to where two Jewish men were stabbed earlier on Wednesday and the memorial wall where an attempted arson attack took place on Monday.

At least 150 protesters marched down the road waving flags and chanting “IRGC terrorists, UK put them on the list”, “Keir Starmer’s a wanker” and “shame on Sadiq Khan”.

Among those speaking to demonstrators was Richard Tice, deputy leader of Reform UK, Laila Cunningham, the party’s candidate for London mayor, and Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary.

The protest was organised by campaign group Stop The Hate.

Badenoch says fear in Golders Green is 'palpable'

19:21 , Holly Evans

Kemi Badenoch has said that the fear within the Jewish community is “palpable” and has said that more needs to be done to tackle antisemitism in the UK.

Speaking on Sky News, she reiterated her statement that it is a “national emergency” and said: “I cannot tell you how palpable the fear people there have. They are scared, people are saying being visibly Jewish now is impossible. “

Referring to her visit to Golders Green, she said: “It was also quite striking that they feel they need to protect themselves. It was Shomrim, the voluntary security who got there and apprehended the assailant.

“They are very worried and I understand why, this is happening all over the country.”

Chris Philp calls for expulsion of Iranian diplomats

19:15 , Holly Evans

The shadow home secretary has called for the expulsion of Iranian diplomats following the stabbing of two Jewish men in north London.

At the scene in Golders Green, Chris Philp said: “There is no question our country’s Jewish community is under attack, and all we get from the government is words.

“Iran is behind some of these attacks, we need to expel Iranian diplomats and spies.

“There is also evidence that foreign nationals are bringing antisemitic views into this country, so any foreign citizen who expresses antisemitic views, support for terrorism, or support for extremism, should be deported.”

Badenoch calls antisemitism a 'national emergency'

19:04 , Holly Evans

At the police cordon in Golders Green, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said: “There are terrorists and violent people who are seeking out visibly Jewish people.

“This is a national emergency.

“It is time to ban these marches, they were initially about a war in the Middle East, but now it’s quite clear they are used as a cover for violence and intimidation against Jews.”

PM to meet with criminal justice agencies to tackle antisemitism

18:54 , Holly Evans

The Prime Minister said he would meet with criminal justice agencies on Thursday following the suspected terror attack in Golders Green.

Sir Keir Starmer told broadcasters: “The Government is taking action in relation to security, cohesion, extremism, but of course it’s our responsibility to co-ordinate the immediate response here to this appalling attack, to ensure security is in place, to take other measures.

“I’m holding a meeting tomorrow with the criminal justice agencies to make sure that we have effective and swift justice in these cases.

“But we do have to recognise the levels of anxiety and concern there are, that I know about in terms of the Jewish community feeling very much exposed and vulnerable, feeling they’ve got to hide their identity, sometimes in the health service, sometimes at school, on the streets where they live.

“It’s our job to make sure that they feel safe and secure. It’s our job to make sure that we absolutely deal with the roots of antisemitism and extremism. That is what we will do.”

Government to deal with 'malign state actors'

18:47 , Holly Evans

Sir Keir Starmer suggested the Government would deal with “the root causes of extremism and antisemitism” following the attack in Golders Green.

He told broadcasters: “I’ve just held a Cobra meeting, bringing together all the relevant partners, including the Home Secretary, the London Mayor, the Metropolitan (Police) commissioner, to co-ordinate our response and to look at enhanced security.

“I’ve also spoken to CST. There is enhanced funding already in place. We need to increase that to give the level of protection that is needed.

“We need to take measures to deal with malign state actors, but we also have to be really clear that we need to get to the root causes of extremism and antisemitism, and so that is what we’re doing.”

Starmer to visit Golders Green 'as soon as possible'

18:34 , Holly Evans

Sir Keir Starmer said he would visit Golders Green “as soon as possible” following today’s “appalling attack”.

He acknowledged the attack was the latest in a string of antisemitic incidents.

The prime minister added: “Let’s be frank, this is not an isolated incident. There’s been a series of antisemitic attacks and I know first hand the anxiety that that is causing in the community and concern.

“I was at Kenton synagogue last week where I heard a lot about that level of anxiety. It’ll be worse after today.

“We’re very much in touch with the community, and I’ll visit as soon as possible.”

Stephen Parkinson, Director of Public Prosecutions, said: “My thoughts are with the victims of today’s appalling attack in Golders Green and the Jewish community at this very difficult time.

Starmer told to tackle ‘pandemic’ of antisemitism after two Jewish men stabbed in terror attack

18:19 , Holly Evans

Sir Keir Starmer has been told he must tackle the “pandemic” of antisemitic attacks in Britain after two Jewish men were brutally stabbed by a knifeman in a terrorist attack in London.

Disturbing CCTV footage captured the moment a man wearing a white t-shirt and dark jacket launched an unprovoked attack on an elderly man wearing a kippah, a Jewish skullcap, near a bus stop in Golders Green, north London.

The alleged assailant was seen walking up the road before he suddenly drew a blade and lunged at the man at around 11.15am on Wednesday, before walking away and leaving his victim bleeding from the neck, witnesses said. Further footage shows the knifeman running to catch up with another Jewish man, who shouts in terror and runs away.

Terror laws watchdog calls for suspension of pro-Palestine marches after attack

18:06 , Holly Evans

The terror laws watchdog has called for a suspension of pro-Palestine marches in the wake of an antisemitic attack.

Jonathan Hall told Times Radio that antisemitic language is “incubated” in the protests as he called the current spate of attacks on Jewish sites “a massive national security emergency”.

He said: ““I do think that we’ve reached the point now… where current political leadership needs to make a case which is deeply uncomfortable about what is happening at the moment to Britons who are being targeted day in, day out.”

Mr Hall went on: “It pains me to say this, but I think we may have reached a point where we need to have a moratorium on the sorts of marches that have been happening.

“It’s clearly impossible at the moment for any of these pro-Palestine marches not to incubate within them some sort of antisemitic or demonising language.

“Let’s just think about it, you’ve got an attack on Brits that is happening day in, day out.

“You might have thought that if that was happening, you might put a pause on the sort of language which we don’t know, but it seems to me, and I’ve said this before, paints a target on the backs of Jews when they are so demonised.”

Chief rabbi names two victims of stabbing

17:52 , Holly Evans

The chief rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis has appeared to name the victims in today's attack as Nachman Moshe ben Chaya Sarah and Moshe Ben Baila.

"Please join me in praying for a swift and complete recovery for the victims of today's attack," he said on social media.

Visibly Jewish people not safe on UK streets, chief rabbi says

17:40 , Holly Evans

The chief rabbi has said that people who are “visibly Jewish” are no longer safe in the UK.

Sir Ephraim Mervis told BBC News: "I'm sad to say that today's event proves that if you are visibly Jewish you're not safe, and far more needs to be done.

He added: "It's a sustained effort to terrorise the Jewish community, which will not succeed, because we're a strong and resilient community.

"We face these kind of attacks and these incidents with great fortitude. However, this cannot be allowed to continue."

He stressed more needed to be done to tackle the causes of antisemitism.

"We need to tackle not just symptoms, but also the causes. We need to recognise that state-sponsored terrorism on the streets of our country is simply unacceptable,” he said.

A timeline of recent attacks on the UK’s Jewish community

17:32 , Holly Evans

The Commonwealth’s Chief Rabbi and Israel’s foreign ministry are calling for action after a series of incidents targeting the Jewish community in the UK.

Sir Ephraim Mirvis said “words of condemnation are no longer sufficient” after two Jewish men were stabbed in London’s Golders Green on Wednesday.

The Israeli foreign ministry, meanwhile, said the recent spate of attacks on Jewish areas means “the UK Government can no longer claim this is under control”.

Here is a look at the attacks on Jewish sites in the UK in the past month:

Rally protesting antisemitic attacks organised outside Downing Street

17:09 , Holly Evans

The Campaign Against Antisemitism says it is calling for a "national emergency" rally outside Downing Street tomorrow evening at 7pm.

A spokesperson said: "We need to dispense with the political platitudes. Prime minister, what is your plan?

"Six months ago we stood outside Downing Street after the fatal terrorist attack [at] Heaton Park Synagogue. Things have only got worse. More Jews attacked. Synagogues burned. More lives at risk. What action is the government taking?"

Jewish communities are 'understandably angry', Met Police chief says

17:03 , Holly Evans

In response to questions about whether the Jewish community was safe and could trust the Met to protect them, Sir Mark Rowley said he understood they were afraid.

He said: “This is an awful attack today. It is completely understandable why Jewish Londoners feel afraid.

“That’s why we’re putting so much extra policing into these events. And we’re going to be looking at what more we can do in forthcoming weeks.

“I’ve had so many thanks from Jewish communities over the last few weeks for all the extra policing that’s done, people recognise that officers are going above and beyond to protect them.

“Such as the officers today who put their lives on the line, taking on somebody they believed was carrying an explosive device.”

Asked directly if Jews were safe, he said: “I can never give an absolute assurance. We’re doing everything we can do to protect people in difficult times, and I’m calling on others to stand out and challenge the antisemitic licensing, which is going on.”

And he added: “Jewish communities are understandably angry. There’s been too many attacks. The response of our officers has been extraordinary. We’re doing everything we can do with the resources available, and I’ll be discussing with government in the forthcoming weeks what more they can do to help us and help the community.”

Police patrols to increase in Manchester

16:54 , Holly Evans

Police patrols will increase in Manchester in response to Wednesday’s stabbing in north London, mayor Andy Burnham has said.

In a post on social media, he said the city was "horrified by the shocking attack in Golders Green".

"Greater Manchester Police have assured us that they will be stepping up patrols, and together with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service they will continue working with Jewish communities here to provide security and reassurance," he said.

In October last year, Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were killed in an attack at Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester in the first fatal antisemitic terror attack in the UK since 1984.

'Silent majority needs to stop being silent,' chief rabbi says

16:42 , Holly Evans

It is time for the “silent majority in the UK to raise their voices” against antisemitism, the Chief Rabbi has said.

Sir Ephraim Mirvis called for “meaningful action” in the wake of the Golders Green stabbings,

Asked what that would look like, he said: “Well, it’s absolutely clear that the time has come for the silent majority in the UK to raise their voices. We know that the vast majority of people are with us. They’re with the Jewish people. They’re with everything that is decent, all of our great British values.

“However, the silent majority needs to stop being silent, and we need to hear their voices.

“And we also need zero tolerance of antisemitism, with regard to hate marches, with regard to antisemitism in all its forms, on university campuses, within the NHS, together with the purposeful anti-Israel demonisation which sometimes takes place, which contributes to a tone of antisemitism, which is in our country.

“And when you have hate speech, it’s only one step away from hate action, as we saw today.”

Chief rabbi says there has been a 'sustained effort to terrorise Jewish people'

16:36 , Holly Evans

The “root causes” of antisemitism must be tackled “not just the symptoms”, the Chief Rabbi said as he praised the work of police.

Sir Ephraim Mirvis told the Press Association: “We had hoped, and further to the response to previous incidents, that something meaningful would be done.

“Now there’s been yet another incident, and so we want to see, in addition to words and in addition to financial support to secure our community which we enormously appreciate, and the excellent work of our police forces, we want the root causes to be tackled and not just the symptoms.”

He said there has been “a sustained effort to terrorise the Jewish people” and said while the community is “very strong” and “resilient”, such incidents must end.

He said: “We’re responding with fortitude. But these attacks have to be stopped.”

Kemi Badenoch says 'we need to drain the swamp' of antisemitism

16:35 , Holly Evans

Kemi Badenoch has said that people who carry out antisemitic crimes need to “feel the full force of the law” during an interview with reporters at the scene.

The tory leader also said there was a need to “tackle Islamic extremism” and for the government to spend less time being “tolerant”.

When questioned how she would keep the community safe by a local Jewish man, she said: “This is one of the things we have to raise with the people in charge. I’m not the police or the prime minister but I can see that there are certain things that are fuelling this.”

Echoing Donald Trump’s recent words, she said: “We need to drain the swamp.”

“I do not want Jewish people in our country to be leading a smaller life or to have to build ever higher walls in order to keep themselves safe.

“These are not warm words, they are a statement of intent and what is and what is not acceptable in our country.

“I will not tolerate a situation where our Jewish citizens have to lead smaller lives compared to the rest of us. That is not acceptable to me.”

Home secretary says it is too early to say if perpetrator has links to Iran

16:18 , Holly Evans

It is too early to say whether the perpetrator of the north London stabbing attack could have links to Iran, Shabana Mahmood said.

Asked about possible ties to Iran, the home secretary told broadcasters: “It’s very early to say what the motivations of this attacker may have been and it would be improper for me to speculate whilst the facts are being established.

“But as soon as more facts are established, then we will of course be keeping the public updated.”

Mahmood says she would 'strain every sinew' to keep Jewish community safe

16:17 , Holly Evans

Home secretary Shabana Mahmood said she would “strain every sinew” to keep Jewish people safe following the “horrifying” suspected terror attack in Golders Green.

She said the government take the security of the community “very seriously” and said there will continue to be an enhanced police presence.

When asked what the government were doing to protect Jewish people, she said on the security and policing side that Labour are doing “absolutely everything that we can” and will also “tackle the root cause of antisemitism”.

Some individuals being encouraged by hostile states, says police commissioner

16:14 , Holly Evans

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley has said that some individuals have been “encouraged, persuaded or paid” by hostile states to carry out acts of violence.

He said: “We also need to be honest about the nation depressed anti-semitism is fuelled by hateful and extremist ideologies the extreme right and the extreme left.

“These are terrorists and hateful belief systems, but they're all rooted in racism. They're given space to operate when civic debate is weak, when hatred is excused, and when people are unwilling to challenge it directly, I also believe now is the time to ask some difficult questions.”

He added: "Let me be clear, we've seen a rise in racist and antisemitic hate crime and whilst I can't comment on my investigations, we know that some individuals are being encouraged, persuaded or paid to commit acts of violence on behalf of foreign organisations and hostile states."

The angry crowd almost drowned out the Labour MP as heckles of “shame on you” were shouted over her words.

"I want to say this to everybody listening - specifically to the British Jewish community - an attack on Britain's Jews is an attack on Britain itself,” she said.

"We cannot tolerate this. I've been with the home secretary just now. The prime minister has called a COBRA meeting. It speaks to just how serious this incident is and what we need to see."

As shouting continues, Sackman says she "understands the anger".

"These were not armed officers and they feared he was carrying an explosive device."

He says they managed to detain the man while he was trying to stab them, before he was Tasered and taken into custody.

"Without their bravery I doubt to think what the outcome could have been," he says.

The organisation said: “We pay tribute to everyone who responded so bravely this morning and we will be increasing security measures even further, working with our partners in the police and government, in the coming days.

“This series of violent attacks on the Jewish community is unprecedented and completely unacceptable.

2025 saw second highest annual total of anti-Jewish hate incidents - Community Security Trust

15:11 , Bryony Gooch

In the year to March 2025, there were 106 religious hate crimes per 10,000 population targeted at Jewish people, the Home Office said in figures published in October.

Separate figures covering the 12 months of 2025, published earlier this year by the Community Security Trust (CST), concluded the second-highest annual total ever recorded for anti-Jewish hate incidents, at 3,700, up 4 per cent on the 3,556 incidents recorded in 2024.

The CST, which monitors antisemitism in the UK, said the annual record high remained at 4,298 antisemitic incidents reported in 2023, the year of the October 7 attack, which prompted a spike in recorded cases of anti-Jewish hate in the UK.

The 2025 report was also the first time more than 200 cases of anti-Jewish hate were recorded in every calendar month.

Victims' Commissioner calls for solidarity with British Jewish community

15:00 , Bryony Gooch

Responding to the stabbings in Golders Green, victims’ commissioner for England and Wales Claire Waxman said: “My thoughts are with the victims of today’s horrific antisemitic attack in Golders Green, and with the wider Jewish community who will be deeply shaken by this incident.

“This is yet another attack in a string of disturbing incidents targeting the Jewish community in this country. As a member of the community, I know how relentless and deeply frightening this feels.

“I urge everyone to stand in solidarity with the British Jewish community – not to be bystanders to this hate or to allow it to become normalised and accepted.

“We all have a responsibility to challenge antisemitism and hatred in all its forms, whether online, on our streets, in workplaces, in schools or on university campuses.

“It is now vital that the police and the wider criminal justice system give these attacks the priority and urgency they demand.

“Those responsible must be held to account swiftly and clear reassurance provided to the Jewish community, and more widely, that this hatred will not be tolerated and has no place in this country.”

Volunteers from Shomrim said they received a call on their hotline at 11.20 am today from someone “with a lot of panic in their voice”, who explained that a man was running around with a knife.

Ben Grossnass said: “It's a sunny Wednesday morning here in London, and [the victims] were coming out of the synagogue”.

He added that they were chased by a man with a knife “trying to stab them.”

“There was someone else standing at the bus stop on Golders Green Road outside a fruit store and he was pushed down to the ground, and the fellow jumped on top of him and stabbed him repeatedly.”

“He was trying to attack anyone visibly Jewish.”

For a “good ten minutes, he was roaming the streets, looking for someone else to attack.”

Within a minute of receiving the call, the team arrived at the scene, he said. A man was detained.

“We dispatched our team, our volunteers, to the scene strategically to understand, to ensure the safety of the people around.

Ben Grossnass, a volunteer in Shomrim’s emergency response unit, said: “We got a phone call to the hotline at 11.20am this morning, we were on the scene within a minute-and-a-half of the phone call.

“I saw a lot of shock in the street and the attacker was having CPR, I think he went into cardiac arrest after being tasered.

“It is fight or flight, I come out and deal with my emotions afterwards.

“There is a lot of hate in society and antisemitism. There are ways the government can crack down on this and it is time they did that.”

Mr Grossnass added in a message directed to the Jewish community: “We have got this and we will be stronger than ever. Stand up and stand resolute”.

Health secretary Wes Streeting admitted “we’ve got to do more as a government and as a country” to protect Jewish people.

He said: “An attack on Britain’s Jewish community is an attack on us all and our way of life.

“This is happening again and again and again.

“I’d like to thank Hatzola, Shomrim and the emergency services for their swift response – but we’ve got more to do as a Government and as a country.”

Debbie Fox, chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council, said she was distraught by the attack.

“It's a feeling of horror. It's this pit in my stomach that seems to be there day in and day out.

“Most of us wake up every morning, and our first thoughts are when and where, but not if.

“This is not just a rise or a spate. This is becoming a pandemic.

“Jewish people living everywhere in this country and all over the world are fearful. The fear rises every day. We are anxious. The anxiety is becoming the norm.

“How terrified should we be? We have to be on guard all day, every day.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been the victims of today's attack, and we really pray for their full recovery and hope that we can live as Jewish people making a contribution to Britain without the fear that we are living with today.”

Israel Morgenstern, 48, raced out of work when he found out the son of his close friend was stabbed today.

He says as soon as he heard about the stabbing, he thought it could be time for his family to leave the UK.

Mr Morgenstern, who has lived in Britain for 15 years, said he had never seen the Jewish community targeted as much as in recent weeks. “We are concerned for our kids who are walking on the street, going shopping. We don't know if they're coming back home.”

In the light of recent events, he said both the government and police needed to immediately take action to protect Jewish people.

“I think we need to have training. I think the police needs to have training. The police in this neighbourhood should have guns with them, not Tasers.”
