A company in Guangdong, China, has sparked outrage after taking extreme measures to monitor employees’ bathroom breaks. Reports indicate that the firm secretly photographed workers who spent extended time in the restroom and publicly displayed their images as a warning.

According to the South China Morning Post, the incident came to light on January 20 when the company printed and posted pictures of employees using the toilet on a bathroom wall. The firm justified the act by claiming it was an effort to curb excessive restroom usage, which they attributed to smoking and mobile gaming.

The situation escalated when an employee failed to respond while inside a stall. In response, a colleague climbed a ladder, took photos using their phone, and subsequently shared them with management. These images were then put up in the workplace as a deterrent to others.

Company representatives defended their actions, emphasizing that they wanted to discourage unproductive behavior. They also highlighted that smoking had been officially banned in the restrooms. However, the photos were later removed, with the firm citing concerns over their unprofessional appearance.

The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with legal experts condemning the company’s actions as an invasion of privacy. Lawyer Zhu Xue from Celue Law Firm denounced the practice, stating that employers have no right to track worker efficiency through illegal means. "Companies shouldn’t be keeping track of their employees’ laziness, especially not in illegal ways," Zhu emphasized.

The controversy has reignited discussions on workplace ethics and employee treatment in China. Many argue that while companies have the right to enforce discipline, there are limits to how far they should go. In recent years, several firms have come under scrutiny for imposing harsh or humiliating measures on workers, raising concerns about corporate culture and labor rights.

Employees deserve a certain level of dignity and respect, regardless of company policies. Monitoring restroom usage through invasive methods sets a dangerous precedent, leading to concerns about broader surveillance in the workplace.

As the debate continues, this incident highlights the importance of protecting employee rights and ensuring fair workplace practices. Whether the company will face legal consequences remains to be seen, but the backlash serves as a strong reminder that privacy and respect should never be compromised in the name of productivity.
