In the trial following the death of a family of four from the northern German city of Hamburg, who were poisoned with insecticides whilst on holiday in Turkey, the Çağlayan Court in Istanbul found four of the six defendants guilty on Friday and handed down lengthy prison sentences.
The hotel operator was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison. The owner of the pest control company received an 18-year prison sentence, as did his son. An employee of the company was sentenced to 12 years and two months.
The judge cited "wilful manslaughter" as the grounds for the verdict.
The receptionists on trial were acquitted.
The family's lawyer, Yasar Balci, had called for a conviction for murder. The defendants' lawyers had pleaded for acquittal.
The brother of the deceased father told dpa that he considered 18 years to be a "fair sentence."
The verdict is not yet final, and the convicted parties can still appeal.
Hamburg family on holiday in Turkey
A father, mother and their two young children from Hamburg had been admitted to hospital in mid-November whilst on holiday in Istanbul with symptoms including vomiting and nausea, and subsequently died.
Initially, the authorities had suspected food poisoning. However, an expert report later established that the cause of death was poisoning from an insecticide used for pest control at the hotel.
