Lorry assistant killed in Lahad Datu collision

LAHAD DATU: A 19-year-old lorry’s assistant was killed while the driver sustained serious injuries when their NPR lorry collided with a tanker at Jalan Segama, Friday.

The 5.20am incident saw Muhamad Raziq Ikhwan succumb to injuries at the scene.

It was learnt that the tanker was heading towards Sukau from Lahad Datu while the lorry was heading towards Tawau from Kota Kinabalu.

District Fire and Rescue Chief, Sumsoa Rashid said the department received a distress call at 5.21am and rushed seven firemen a fire engine and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle to the scene.

Upon arrival, the team discovered that the accident involved a tanker and lorry. The lorry driver was seriously hurt while his assistant died at the scene. The tanker driver escaped unhurt in the incident.

“The EMRS team provides early treatment to the lorry driver before he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

“The team later conducted an inspection to ensure no other dangers at the scene before ending the operation at 7.50am,” he added.
