A LORRY driver was jailed 12 months by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today after he pleaded guilty to two charges linked to the death of a social media influencer allegedly due to cyberbullying.
A Rajeswary, better known as Esha, 29, was found dead at her home in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, on July 5, a day after she filed a police report that she was being harassed on TikTok.
Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali meted out the sentence on B. Sathiskumar after he changed his plea to guilty during mention proceedings.
She ordered him to serve 12 months for each charge concurrently from the date of his arrest on July 10.
Before sentencing, the father of three apologised and admitted to his actions and promised not to repeat them.
“I am guilty. I won’t do it again. I ask for forgiveness, puan (judge), I won’t do it again,“ he was quoted as saying from the dock.
On the first charge, Sathiskumar was accused of intentionally making obscene remarks with the intention of hurting others through his TikTok account, Dulal Brothers 360.
He allegedly committed at 10.12pm on June 30, with the remarks read at Jalan Ipoh, Sentul.
For the second charge, Sathiskumar was accused of humiliating Rajeswary’s mother, R. Puspa, 56, through the same TikTok profile on the same date, time and place.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Sabri Othman urged the court to impose a prison sentence, considering the severity of the offence, public interest, and the victim’s rights.
Muhamad Izwan Ishak from the National Legal Aid Foundation asked for a minimum prison term to run concurrently as it was Sathiskumar's first offence and he has a disabled wife, three children, and earned RM1,500 monthly as a lorry driver. - September 25, 2024
