KUALA LUMPUR – The driver of the lorry involved in a crash that killed nine members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) has been remanded for four days starting today.
The remand order against the 45-year-old man was issued by Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman at the Teluk Intan Magistrates’ Court, Bernama reported.
Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Bakri Zainal Abidin said the man is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving resulting in death.
If convicted, the offence carries a prison sentence of five to 10 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, and a minimum five-year disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence.
The crash occurred at around 8.50am yesterday, when the lorry driven by the suspect collided with and crashed into a truck carrying 18 FRU officers. The officers were on their way back to Ipoh after completing duties for the Chitrapournami festival in Teluk Intan.
Eight personnel were pronounced dead at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
Of the remaining nine officers, eight are currently being treated at Teluk Intan Hospital, while one has been transferred to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh.
Post-mortem examinations were completed last night, and the burials are expected to be concluded today. – May 14, 2025
