RANAU: An accident involving a cement-laden lorry on the main KM1 Jalan Ranau-Telupid route at  5.10pm on Wednesday caused severe two-hour traffic congestion in the area.

Vehicles from Kota Kinabalu, Tambunan and Sandakan were stuck for 5km.

The lorry is believed to have been speeding and lost control before skidding onto the left shoulder of the road and overturning in front of the old Ranau Information Department quarters.

The Ranau IPD Traffic Team was deployed to the location to control traffic flow and arrange special vehicles for the removal of the heavy vehicle.

The lorry driver did not suffer any injuries, although cement was scattered all over the road surface. The overturned lorry blocked the entire road path.

The incident also caused engine oil to spill onto the road surface at the incident location, making the road surface slippery and posing a high risk to road users.

Road cleaning and restoration work helped traffic flow return to normal in stages at around 7pm.

Ranau police urged all road users to always be careful and prudent when driving.

“Ensure that heavy vehicles are maintained regularly. Avoid driving when tired or in bad weather. Always obey the speed limit and vehicle control on hilly or winding roads.

“Obey the instructions of the Traffic Control Department. Obey the speed limit set, especially in school areas and public gathering zones. Avoid driving while drowsy or under the influence of alcohol.

“Use seat belts and helmets at all times. Do not use mobile phones while driving, and always give way to emergency vehicles,” explained the advice issued by the Ranau PDRM.

The statement added that Ranau police always conducts regular traffic monitoring and operations and action will be taken against any individual who violates the road laws.

“Being careful on the road saves lives. Be a responsible road user. Any complaints or information can be channelled to IPD Ranau at 088-875222,” the statement explained.
