THE Dewan Rakyat passes the Employees’ Social Security (Amendment) Bill 2025, introducing a landmark scheme that will provide round-the-clock protection for Malaysian workers, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said on Wednesday.

“This is the first time since 1969 that the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) will offer comprehensive protection to workers at all times, including outside of working hours,” Steven Sim stated.

“Malaysian employees will now be protected 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at any time. This initiative will save costs for workers, their families, employers, and the government.”

He estimated that in the first year of implementation, the Skim Lindung 24/7 could save taxpayers up to RM600 million in medical and welfare expenditure.

The amendment aims to extend social security coverage to nearly 10 million formal-sector employees nationwide, providing unprecedented protection beyond the workplace.

“This historic reform ensures that workers are safeguarded at all times, reflecting a significant evolution in Malaysia’s commitment to social security and employee welfare,” Steven Sim added, highlighting the long-term economic and social benefits of the 24/7 scheme.

The passage of the Bill underscores the government’s focus on comprehensive labour protections, financial prudence, and enhanced support for the nation’s workforce. - December 3, 2025
