LRT3 launch marks new chapter in nation’s integrated public transport drive

THE launch of the Shah Alam LRT3 line marks a major milestone in Malaysia's drive to build a more modern, efficient and integrated public transport system, with the government positioning the project as a catalyst for economic growth and improved quality of life.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the new rail line extends beyond providing a transport service, delivering far-reaching economic and social benefits to millions of residents living along the corridor through faster, more reliable and affordable connectivity.

He said commuters would enjoy shorter travel times, lower daily transport costs and reduced reliance on private vehicles, while the new line is also expected to ease traffic congestion across the Klang Valley.

The Prime Minister said LRT3 would also serve as a catalyst for transit-oriented development (TOD), stimulating fresh investment, expanding commercial activities, creating new employment opportunities and enhancing the competitiveness of communities connected by the rail network.

The government has already identified several stations along the Shah Alam LRT3 corridor for TOD, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke naming Seri Andalas, Kayu Ara, Bandar Bukit Tinggi and Johan Setia as priority locations for integrated residential and commercial development.

"If previously the focus was only on park-and-ride facilities, the land was not being optimised. For example, if there are 600 parking spaces, the people using the LRT typically leave their vehicles there from morning until night.

"So even though there are 600 parking bays, they only benefit those 600 users because the spaces are occupied throughout the day. We therefore need to look at optimising land use, and this TOD concept reflects the government's policy," Loke said after the launch ceremony today.

He added that the TOD projects would be implemented through partnerships with private developers to ensure surrounding communities benefit directly from the economic opportunities generated by the rail infrastructure.

Loke also announced that Prasarana plans to extend the Shah Alam LRT3 line with five additional stations at Tropicana, Raja Muda, Temasya, Bukit Raja and Bandar Botanik, with construction expected to begin by the end of this year.

Anwar said the improved transport network would provide broader access to employment opportunities, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and essential public services, helping to raise living standards while ensuring the benefits of development are shared more equitably.

He said the launch underscored the MADANI Government's commitment to delivering people-centred development, strengthening Malaysia's economic resilience and ensuring that the country's progress benefits all segments of society, both now and for future generations. - June 28, 2026
