LRT3 operations scheduled to begin on Sept30 this year

THE Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) project, which will link Shah Alam in Selangor with its surrounding areas, is scheduled to begin operations on September 30, 2025.

This marks a significant milestone for the project, as it will officially begin after the main contractor hands over the project to Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) on July 31, 2025, Bernama reported today.

In a written response published on the official Parliament website this Wednesday, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) revealed that the overall progress of the LRT3 project has reached 98.16 percent to date. This announcement highlights the near-completion of the long-awaited transit system.

As part of the final preparations, the ministry confirmed that a series of non-passenger train operations will be conducted in two stages. These tests are crucial to ensuring that the LRT3 services meet the required safety standards before being opened to the public.

“The two tests, which include compliance, system durability, and safety measures, will involve a ‘Trial Run’ (TR) alongside a ‘Fault Free Run’ (FFR), both of which will be carried out concurrently by the main contractor, Setia Utama LRT3 Sdn Bhd,” the Ministry of Transport explained in its statement.

The testing phase is expected to last approximately 75 days. During this period, the results of the FFR will be assessed by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), which will evaluate the safety aspects, adherence to standards, and the reliability of the rail system.

This update comes in response to a question raised by Azli Yusof, the Member of Parliament for Shah Alam (PH-Shah Alam), regarding the current status of the LRT3 project, the duration of the trial runs, and the targeted full operation date, which is set for the third quarter of 2025.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the Trial Run and Fault Free Run are expected to commence in mid-April 2025 and conclude by the end of June 2025. Following this, the next phase, known as the “Trial Operation” (TO), will begin, conducted by Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, the licensed operator of the railway.

Technical assistance from the main contractor will be provided during this stage once the TR and FFR are completed and APAD approval is granted.

“The Trial Operation is projected to last for approximately 60 days. We expect this phase to begin in July 2025 and conclude by the end of August 2025,” the Ministry of Transport further clarified.

This timeline sets the stage for the LRT3 system to be fully operational by the scheduled date of September 30, 2025, marking a major achievement for Malaysia's public transportation infrastructure.- February 27, 2025
