THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued show cause orders against eight bus companies accused of implementing unauthorized fare increases, warning of possible suspension or cancellation of their operating permits.

LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II said the firms, some of which operate routes to the Bicol Region, were directed to explain why their Certificates of Public Convenience (CPCs) should not be revoked.

“We understand the challenges that bus companies and other operators of public utility vehicles are facing now, but these challenges must never be used as a reason or as an excuse to violate existing regulations at the expense of commuters,” Mendoza said.

The companies have 10 days from receipt to justify their actions after allegedly imposing additional charges due to rising fuel costs without LTFRB approval. They were also ordered to immediately stop collecting unauthorized fares.

A hearing has been set on April 23. The LTFRB warned that failure to submit an explanation or attend the hearing would be treated as a waiver, which could lead to penalties, including a fine of P5,000.

The regulator earlier approved a fare adjustment for public utility vehicles, including buses, but its implementation was suspended upon the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., citing the impact of rising oil prices on commuters.

The LTFRB added it has deployed “mystery riders” to monitor compliance and detect overcharging. It also urged passengers to report incidents of illegal fare increases as part of its enforcement efforts.
