SHAH ALAM, Feb 2 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) has managed to control an incident of diesel and hydraulic oil spillage that resulted from an accident along KM 371.9 (southbound) of the North-South Highway, near the Slim River exit in Perak yesterday.
State executive councillor for the environment Hee Loy Sian said timely action by LUAS alongside other agencies managed to prevent a disruption to the Bernam River Headworks Water Treatment Plant’s (WTP) operations, at an estimated 22.7km from the affected site.
The accident involved a trailer carrying eight barrels of hydraulic oil, which fell into a highway ditch at around 12.40am.
“A review determined that four of the eight hydraulic oil drums being transported by the trailer ruptured due to the accident, which led to a diesel oil spill.
“Preliminary preventive measures were taken by PLUS Expressway, with the placement of sawdust on the road surface to absorb the oil,” he said in a statement today.
Hee added that further checks revealed there was no flow of oil into the highway drain, and consequently no polluted flow in the drain that could have entered the nearby river.
On its part, LUAS has also placed sawdust along the length of the oil flow, to increase control as a preventative measure.
“LUAS will monitor the situation on site until the clean-up work has been completed, to ensure there are no further effects of pollution on the river and WTPs in Selangor,” he said.
