The American Dream, a simple belief that Americans can achieve a better life through their hard work, yet a chilling reality is happening with the alleged crimes of Luigi Mangione, a name that is famously seen as either a perceived hero or a cold-blooded murderer.

Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old valedictorian, is facing serious charges for orchestrating the death of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare.

The main reason in Mangione’s actions were driven by his personal back injury in 2023 and was enraged by the injustice from the insurance company.

His alleged actions, while monstrous, is triggering the existing frustration that Americans currently feel.

The disturbing amount of online support for Mangione’s alleged act is not an excuse to murder people, but it is a sign of desperation to yearn for someone to strike back at a system that is perceived as untouchable.

But consider this: how many Americans silently wither away as they navigate the harsh world of insurance approvals, chasing claims and the constant fear of financial ruin due to being sick?

Let’s examine the environment that may have caused this extreme resentment: Despite the US spending more on healthcare than any other country, Americans health isn’t as good, mainly because they can’t afford basic medical care and they are frequently denied of any necessary coverage. Meanwhile, most healthcare funds go towards billings, advertising or executive bonuses, not actual medical care.

The proper solution is to have an effective system and shift the focus from corporate profit to the human right of access to health services. Perhaps this act of extreme violence, born from the perceived helplessness, can serve as a brutal wake-up call, revealing the shattered ideal of the American Dream.
