Luigi Mangione faced an extradition hearing Tuesday in Pennsylvania after New York prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder in connection with last week’s brazen killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

As Mangione was escorted in handcuffs into the Blair County Courthouse in Pennsylvania, he yelled: “It’s completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!”

Mangione was denied bail and is fighting extradition. His lawyer said he expects the suspect to plead not guilty.

Mangione will remain in a Pennsylvania jail as he fights being brought to New York to face charges.

The New York counts were filed against the 26-year-old after he was captured at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday. He was initially hit with separate weapons and forgery charges in Pennsylvania not directly related to the shooting.

Just two weeks before the UnitedHealth CEO was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan, Mangione’s mother, Kathleen, reported him missing to San Francisco police on November 18, according to the San Francisco Standard.

Mangione also posted about an “absolutely brutal” and “life-halting” case of what he deemed “brain fog,” an ailment for which he struggled to find a solution.

The Maryland native also mentioned having gotten testing for irritable bowel syndrome, care that was covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield, the only apparent reference to healthcare on his Reddit.

Nonetheless, the fake ID has caused quite a stir for residents in Maplewood itself.

“Just about everyone in my life has been texting me since the news broke,” one resident told NorthJersey.com. “We joked the address is the tree house in the backyard. I get healthcare is a problem, but it is still a tragedy. And a ridiculous cover up.”

According to CNN, it could take months for the individual or individuals to successfully claim the $60,000 reward. And we may never know who they are.

‘Ghost guns are a criminal’s dream come true'

Tuesday 10 December 2024 18:07

Andrea Cavallier

The gun safety group Giffords released a statement on ghost guns following Mangione’s arrest.

“Ghost guns are a criminal’s dream come true. The targeted assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, potentially committed with a ghost gun, shows just how dangerous these weapons are in the wrong hands,” Giffords Executive Director Emma Brown said.

“Anyone can print them at home or buy unfinished parts online without a background check or training. Yet due to extremists in the gun lobby, the ATF’s rule to stop criminals from getting ghost guns is under threat. Americans’ safety from ghost guns now lies in the hands of the Supreme Court justices. Here’s the bottom line: Ghost guns threaten public safety and must be subject to background checks like the guns they are.”

Set with the task of tracking down a fugitive from the law, you can guarantee social media will track them down in record time – even if the only thing to go by is a small, three-inch gap between a mask and a hood. As was the case with the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson.

Mangione questions whether some evidence was ‘planted’

Tuesday 10 December 2024 14:40

James Liddell

Luigi Mangione claimed he was “not sure” if cash found on him at the time of his arrest at an Altoona, Pennsylvania McDonald’s was “planted” as he was arraigned on Monday evening.

The suspected UnitedHealth CEO shooter took issue with prosecutors’ claims during his first court appearance at the Blair County Court House in Hollidaysburg, as he was read a full complaint by a judge.

Along with a ghost gun, a 262-page manifesto and false identification, prosecutors said he was carrying about $8,000 in US dollars and $2,000 in foreign currency, CNN reported.

Prosecutors also claimed that he had a faraday bag – a bag used to conceal wireless transmissions from devices.

Mangione told prosecutors that he’d “like to correct two things,” according to correspondent Danny Freeman.

According to Freeman, he said: “I don’t know where any of that money came from – I’m not sure if it was planted. And also, that bag was waterproof, so I don’t know about criminal sophistication.”

What is spondylolisthesis? The spinal conditioning that may have plagued Mangione

Tuesday 10 December 2024 10:21

James Liddell

Brian Thompson’s alleged killer is said to have suffered with chronic back pain – and apparently wrote a handwritten note stating that he was suffering from spondylolisthesis, CNN reports.

But what is spondylolisthesis?

The condition is where a vertebra, one of the bones in your spine, slips or shifts forward onto the vertebra below. It often occurs in the lower back.

Doctors can diagnose spondylolisthesis as either low-grade or high-grade, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

“A high-grade slip occurs when more than 50% of the width of the fractured vertebra slips forward on the vertebra below it,” its website reads.

Those with a high-grade slip are more likely to experience “significant pain” and “nerve injury” and need surgery to relieve their symptoms, according to the AAOS.

ICYMI: Josh Shapiro slams those who celebrated UnitedHealthcare shooting

Tuesday 10 December 2024 10:00

At a press conference on Monday evening in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Shapiro addressed the “disturbing” number of Americans who had “looked to celebrate instead of condemning this killer.”

Authorities have named 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who was arrested in Pennsylvania earlier that day, a “strong person of interest” in the killing, although he has not yet been charged in connection with that crime. He was charged with gun crimes after being arrested in Pennsylvania, though officials say they expect charges to be filed in New York in connection to the fatal shooting of the executive.

“Brian Thompson was a father to two. He was a husband. And he was a friend to many. And yes he was the CEO of a health insurance company,” Shapiro told reporters.
